Open Clutch Covers

Hey! New member, just picked up my first Duc a couple of days ago, 2003 749 Yellow 3.5k miles. (BTW do you pronounce it "DUCK" or "DUKE?")

It came with a Leo Vince slip on, so it's not worth it for me to upgrade to a Termi, but I wanted to know more about the open clutch covers. What is the benefit of having one? All I can think of is that it sounds cool. Is this the only reason, (maybe lighter)? Also, does having one put your clutch at a higher risk of getting dirty? I don't know much about the mechanics of these bikes, but is it a serious risk for crap to get in there and screw your clutch up?
 
First off, Welcome aboard


1) Duc or "duck"....the Duke is a KTM.

2) Some think It sounds better but I prefer the sweet sound of the twin
over the ringing clatter of the clutch plates, it's personal preference.

3) The open cover started with racers to help cool the clutch and prevent
glazing, something 99% of street riders will never need to worry about.

4) Yes the clutch is more vulnerable especially If It's laid down on the
right side and yes, crap can get In there but It's rare.
 
When I got MY 749, I did a Google-search and found
an open-slotted carbon fiber clutch cover from Thomas
Queen in Virginia. Just $75! Now, 1-3/4 years and
11,000 miles later, it looks as good as new. No cracking
or warping. I also took some metal winow screen and
Gorilla-glued it inside the cover. Just to keep out such
things as gravel, bugs, road trash, and dropped Harley
parts. Yeah, you can spend much more...but WHY?
