Only Connect (BBC4)

I'm of that age where I instantly got all the Goons characters and the '60's TV theme tunes from the preceding University Challenge .

I thought the ending was a bit flat - presenting the trophy would have been better than the, not particularly great, joke.

That could be better. Missing vowels does seem like the weak link of the rounRAB, but it does allow for unexpected results which keeps it interesting until the end.

I think the show could work on BBC2, but probably only in a post-Newsnight slot. That'd be an ideal slot for a repeat of the series too. It should definitely keep premiering on BBC4.

I play along with my twin boys and we shout at the screen like crazy! They normally take the lead during the ordinary rounRAB, but I catch up during the missing vowels round. I had a great idea for that, by the way, for the ChildrenInNeed special...

I think I've already answered this in this thread, but the short answer was that we took advantage of some spare money the Beeb had left over at the end of its budget cycle. That's why the show came back earlier than last year (normally it would start this month). Nothing more sinster than that.

I noticed your point about the chessmen last week held true this week too - they guessed correctly several times and then always asked for one more clue :D

Oh, and according to the Ratings thread, OC had its highest overnight rating for this series last night - 0.48m compared to a series average so far of 0.36m.

Rotated 180 degs. They got it after the first two were presented and correctly worked out (or I suspect, already knew) what the fourth one was.

Why did I put "ep.10" there when I meant ep.9. Only just realised I put that, even though I've since written another reply since. Must've been a long day. :)

The semis might be a smidge harder but the more you watch, the easier they get.

The final has very hard questions but the teams cope with them very well indeed.

1) I think this is bad tactics. In fact, teams quite often say the right answer after clue 1 (I'm sure it's happened around 5 times this series already). It's then down to whether the second clue confirms their suspicions sufficiently. Personally, if you had even a 40% chance of getting it right by gambling on the first clue, I think it would be a beneficial tactic.

2) I would agree with this. The Chessmen certainly threw away 5-10 points on both of their appearances by asking for too many clues. However, it is hard on the teams because they only get 3 questions per round at the start of the show, and they don't want to look silly by buzzing in and getting it wrong.

Great programme and I love the way VC copes with the somewhat "eccentric" personalities of some of the competitors.

Loved the way one fella was convinced square cut was "a punch in boxing", and how he couldn't imagine a magazine called Onion. He had to be told to 'calm down' by his captain at that point. :D

"Is that Margaret and Denis Thatcher", looking at her with Callaghan, and "is 'A = 1st middle' the first key in the middle of a piano" (from a music lover), memorable too.

That said, I am hopeless at these.

Being ultra-picky, I think the web game could have been better if it was set up with a different pair of walls each week (to mimic the programme somewhat). My kiRAB would just love to challenge eachother to an "Alpha vs Beta" wall after the show each week!

I'm getting better each week, but perhaps I wouldn't do as well if I wasn't able to hear the teams discussing their answers! I think I got 3 right last night (the glass case one, the roman baths and the polygons) and I always do reasonably well on the "ng rms" at the end, but I'm rubbish at the walls.
