ongoing chest pain?

This is my first time posting, and Im not quite sure if I am in the right place, so please re direct me if I'm not! :)

A few months ago I was diagnosed with costochondritis. The problem is, is that if that diagnosis is correct, I've been living with it for about a year and a half.
Before it all started, I was feeling perfectly fine. I was on the computer and had a little tickle in my throat, so I was coughing pretty hard for a couple minutes or so. All of a sudden I get a sharp pain in the center of my chest. Since then it usually hurts to cough, sneeze, bend backwards, and sometimes breath deeply. Sometimes it's more painful than others. The first time I went to the doctor she just said I hurt myself coughing and I was fine. (didnt do any tests, feel my chest, or anything). Fast forward about a year.... (pain is still going on) ...One night I feel as though I'm having a panic attack, I am nervous and can't sit still and my stomach was hurting very bad. I feel like maybe I need to throw up or go to the bathroom to make myself feel better. Nothing helped. After a couple hours I calmed down enough to fall asleep. That morning I was still feeling the same way (anxious, feeling the need to vomit) and decieded to go to the ER. They did blood work and listened to my stomach to discover that i had a "gurgly" stomach and it just might be a little infection. They gave me something for my nausea and sent me home. A couple of days went by and I hardly felt any better. Second trip to the ER... this time it was more that my breathing felt off. (this is the part where i have a hard time explaining...) I'm not really wheezing or short of breath, but it feels as though something is in my chest or throat. (weird i know) Basically they told me I was having a panic attack and sent me home. But it seems to me like I didnt have a lot of those symptoms..? Just because it had been going on for a couple of days and I wasn't "panicked". Anyway, those ER trips were about 5 months or so ago. Now, I am not the kind of person that goes to the doctor for every ache and pain. Last time (before this episode) I was at the doctor was at least a few years ago for a physical. What scares me about all of this is for about 5 or 6 years I get sharp pains in my chest (around left breast area). sometimes its worse than others and usually lasts for a few minutes at least. these happen once a week... a few times a month... no telling. I had an EKG and it turned out fine. Now I will admit that I have been worrying about this 24/7 and it has really interfered with my life. So I know that stress/anxiety COULD be a part of this, but all of this pain started way before (obviously) I was anxious. So of course I am thinking all of the worst things possible- cancer, blood clots, a tumor from somewhere else that broke off into my chest... etc. (a lot of internet searching).
Thank you for taking the time to read this novel!! Apologies for it being so long, I am just tired of dealing with this. Forgot to add- I am a 23 year old female and do not really have any constant stress in my life right now.

I feel your pain...literally.

When I was first diagnosed with costochondritis I thought the worst. I would panic over the pain. I kept thinking it was my heart until I spoke to the doctor. I would lay awake for hours. I too had a few panic attacks about it.

Mine started after some heavy lifting over a long period of time. Now I need to be careful of what I lift and when I lift things. I have had flare ups from bad coughs.

When my doctor diagnosed the costochondritis she pressed on the bone underneath the rib cage and that recreated the pain I was feeling. That was how she figured out what it was. Now when I am having those pains on the left side of my chest. I just press there because that tells me that it is my costochondritis. I also think about what I have been doing. The slightest awkward movement can cause a flare up for me.

Just know you are not alone in this. Let me know if you want to know more or just want to talk.

I was told I have costochondritis also. I have been in pain since Oct 2009. I had a CT Scan and an XRAY done (at my request) to rule out anything else. You could opt for one of those to make you feel better (mentally)!

This is also my first post...I am shocked at how many people there are with " our condition "
I have read so many posts and seem to have a little of what everybody else has.
My costo just come and goes and can totally ruin my day / weekend....The stress it can build up is very hard to describe to a non sufferer.
I have been to 3 doctors, 1 Hospital, and a Cardiologist who tell me I am fine but I know there is something not right....And then the mind games start even though logically you know everything is fine.
I am determined to get on top of this but just struggling at the moment
Thanks

I had been operated of a lumpectomy (twice it was) on the 5tht of May... During all that time I haven't had any trouble.
It all just started last week, on Wednesday, while I was out of my house at a restaurant, with friends playing games. Suddenly I got a sharp and stabbing pain in my left side nadn near the breast scar of the lumpectony, and after my husband talked to the doctor I started taking 800 mg.
I was fine, till this Tuesday, when the pain again started around almost in the same area but this other time was more near the center and the pain was unberable, so I ended my night in ER, with one X-ray, 2 EKG and blood tests. By then: everything was normal, afterwards I went to my radiation and they said I should skip the radiation treatement and go back to the ER and get a CT-Scan... Again more that 8 hours there and this time, after more eKGs (3), blood test, X-rays and 1 IV the ER made me a CT-scan (after many hours of being there) and it said I had bronchitis with costochondritis.
I'm still suffering from pain in the right side, plus pain in my left breast and the left side. I am thinking it would be caused by radiation, as they are radiating me from both sides. Or: the radiation caused something in my lungs and from that is I was diagnosed with bronchitis and costochondritis. Could someone let me know if that's true?
Thank you for your help...
Mati

Hi Mati - There seems so much doctors dont know about Costochondritis.
It is very frustrating but I have found another good web site below ( just copy into your browser ) It gives a definitive description of this condition.

The frustrating thing for me is some days are great whilst others are very debilitating and you spend the whole day worrying about a heart attack even though you know most likely this is not the case.

If your doctor can confirm your condition IS costo then this would be a good start

Good Luck
