One story or two story house?

My family is thinking about buying a new house, and this is a recurring question that keeps popping up. My dad and I have no problem with either. We just want a nice house at a reasonable price located in a good neighborhood. My mom on the otherhand, has no interest in buying a two story house at all. She says that it's harder to clean & carry furniture up, if we have a leak it'll affect the ceiling downstairs, the air conditioning/heating cost is more expensive (something about there being two for each stories), and that climbing the stairs are loud and you can hear people taking showers upstairs downstairs. I have no idea where she got this information from, maybe her friends. To me, I think it just depends on the house and how old it is and stuff, but she won't listen!

But you see, we've been trying to fit her desire and have been looking for 4 bedroom (one for my parents, one for me, one for my brother, one for my grandma) one story houses for almost a year and a half, but have found none! It's very hard to find a 4 bedroom one story first of all, the area we live in has some very nice neighborhoods but the houses are almost all two stories, and one story houses that accomodate what we need are waaaay overpriced, especially in the economy nowadays. However, me and my dad have found some great two story houses too.

I NEED to know the pros and cons of one story and two story houses so we can negotiate with my mom. The houses we're looking at are quite new too (1990 and above). Both my parents don't want to buy any older houses.

We are in desperate need of a new house. The house we live in now is small & cramp, especially now that my grandma moved in with us. The neighborhood isn't the best, I guess you can call it ghetto, so we really want to move into a nicer neighborhood.

Please help! Pros and cons of one story and two story houses?
