Oh, it was certainly just in his imagination, like that scene earlier when he imagines being "Uncle Si" and being accepted as part of this family. I guess that when he discovered this family that he had idealised was less than perfect, thats what tipped him over the edge. It forced him to confront the fact that he had built an elaborate fantasy that had nothing to do with reality, and hence to confront his own pitiful existence, and hence to remember the abuse he suffered as a child which he had subsumed in his work and through his fantasy of a perfect family life. Thats how I see it anyway.
 
Well, the film opened with Si in the police station, and the events roll out after the hotel incident to his arrest.

Charged and with the various misdemeanors - (threatening behaviour, holding against will, theft (use of company materials) etc. , and then convicted.
