Once a lawyer starts a case, does he have to finish it?

I'm being sued by a former boss and I hired a lawyer. We are going to mediation in oct and the trial period is in Novemver-December, but I am running out of money to pay my lawyer. Initially when I signed with this lawyer the contract said basically if I didn't pay he would work, my questions is can he legally do that? I have had people tell me that once a lawyer starts he has to see it through, that he cant just quit, is this true? Also, have you ever heard of lawyers making a payment plan with clients when theyrun out of money? Thanks for all the help.
