On Verizon, am i required to have a data plan for a smartphone?

I have a razr right now so my line doesnt have the data plan but my moms does.
Do we all have the data or just her for her Blackberry?
Could i just go by the mb/$ rate and keep my line data disabled -
My line is currently data disabled.
Oh and what happens if i activate it myself and i dont have a data plan?
 
you do have to buy a $30 a month data plan. I just recently bought a droid and the plan is totally worth it.I use it ALL the time. If you need a new phone i recommend this phone. But any smartphone im sure you will use it.
