On the Sims 2 Pets game can you keep stray pets?

I have the Sims 2 Pets game and I love it, it's really fun. On the game strays come and go, if your sim gets a strong relationship with a stray dog/cat is there any possible way you can make it so you can keep the stray as your pet, and how do you do it?

I NEED SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ALOT ABOUT THE SIMS 2 PETS GAME!!!! PLEASE DON'T ANSWER THIS IF YOU DON'T KNOW!
