On the motorola driod text messaging?

Actually you are looking at gtalk. The green dot means the gtalk server has had "contact" with the person recently (15 or 20 minutes), the orange means the person hasn't officially "signed off" of gtalk, but had not had any recent activity, so the person may or may not be likely to see a message from you.
 
when you click the messaging button and it brings you up to all your threads, well all the threads have the last time someone sent you a message and above that in the corner there is a little orange clock that appears on that person occasionally. Then sometimes a green dot, but that one means there on gmail, and i can't figure out what the little orange clock means?
