on my sharp lc-32sb24u I can't use the control panel?

I don't have a remote for my TV so i've always just used the tv buttons. I came in today and got the error message "the operation with control panel is prohibited." How do I get around this without having the remote? I'm on a ship so I can't just leave and go buy a new remote.
