On my iphone4, why can't I multitask when it comes to listening to my music?

When I open up the iPod app where my music and videos are and play music, the music will stop playing if I hit the home button to go use another app. Would the problem be that my music files are actually music videos that I've downloaded from YouTube? If so, why?, and is there anything I can do about it? If that wouldn't be the problem, then why else?, and is there anything I can do about it?

Additional info: in the "videos" tab, the videos that I've downloaded are present. In the "songs" tab, the downloaded videos are also there where I can play them all, shuffle them, repeat them, and shuffle and repeat.
And yes, I've already checked this out in "settings" unless there is something I'm missing.

The problem is you are not multitasking properly. You do not multitask by pressing the home button and choosing another app. You double press the home button quickly and select the next app from the row that comes up. This does not apply to the iPod app because it has supported multitasking since long before iOS 4.0 was released. If you are able to download and save videos, it sounds like your phone is jailbroken and that could be having an effect on your ability to multitask.
