The 12 volt hot wire goes to the gage, it grounds through the sending unit on the block. The hotter the sending unit gets, the more it grounds. I know that is how it works on a ford. Ya I know don't say it. But I love my fords. I am thinking the fuel gage works the same way. It grounds through the sending unit. Just trace down the wires to the correct sending units and that should be it.
