what does the little speech bubble symbol mean next to the person you're talking to's name? Does this mean they are currently writing a message back?

Yes it means that they are writing back if it's grey it shows that they are offline, if its green it shows that they are online, and if its a moon symbol then it means they are online but facebook is closed.
