On a Toyota Matrix, what does refrigerant have to do with the car's heating system?

I took my 2003 Matrix to the Toyota dealer to get the heating system repaired because three of the four vents were blowing cool air when the heat was turned up to high. The service person told me they needed to add dye to the refrigerant to check for leaks. Unless the heating system in my Matrix is a heat pump, I don't understand the need for checking the AC systems for leaks. Can someone who knows about Toyotas help.
