on a road bike is aluminum more stiff or carbon fiber. ?

i know that carbon fiber can be stiffer,lighter,and more expencive but i am talking a same class in range stiffness exp. $1000 aluminum frame on a road bike and a $1000 dollor carbon fiber. sorry for explaining so much just want you to be clear. . . . . . . . . . .thanks
 
if by stiffer you mean better able to absorb impact, then the carbon frame is "stiffer". In addition, it is also 'stiffer" because carbon fiber frames do not bend; when their resistance limit has been reached they break, unlike metal, which also breaks but may bend. carbon frames are better suited to absorb impact becaise engineers are able to manipulate the material's properties better than metal. you can align the fibers of the carbon in the most convenient way possible for impact absorption, metal cannot be manipulated in such way.
 
Neither one is inherently stiffer than the other, it depends on the quality of frame you buy. I'd bet that that any $1000 aluminum frame would be stiffer than a $1000 carbon frame.
