On a budget, should I get a quad core or a dual core. Mostly for gaming.?

I'm building a new rig but I'm on a really tight budget here. I've read all over the place that quad cores are great for people who are into video editing and things like that, but I'm mainly going to be using this for gaming.

Right now I'm looking at the Phenom II X2 555 for about $92. But I could also get the Athlon II X4 640 for about $100. So they're about the same price. I'd be willing to spend a little more, but right now I'm thinking around that price range, so the question is whether to get a dual core or a quad core.

I think for right now it won't make much of a difference since most games don't take advantage of quad core cpu's. My concern is how a dual core will hold up in the next few years to come.
