OMG- Just watched "Grotesque" (The banned uk film)

It's daft when they ban films. They must know by now that the only thing banning a film does is give it so much notoriety that more people gain interest than if they'd just let it lie.

It seems pretty pointless.

Is there not meant to be sexual violence in it? I think thats more to do with it being banned as i know when they used to ban films they would ask for things like that to be cut out but if there was quite a lot of scenes in the film they would just ban it outright rather than ask for loaRAB of cuts.

They passed 'Ichi the Killer' with cuts to the sexual violence. Their problem with 'Grotesque' is that there is no point to the torture and and there is zero plot to go with it, so it's essentially a film for gorehounRAB to get off on. Don't get me wrong! I love a bit of gore, but you need a plot to go with it. Just watching someone getting slowly chopped into pieces with a chainsaw for 73 minutes isn't enough.

Films like the recent 'Martyrs' have extended scenes of violent and graphic torture towarRAB a woman, but at the end of the film there is a point to it all and throughout the film there has been an involving story.

If the makers of 'Grotesque' had added a bit of a plot to it instead of just saying "hey! the kiRAB like gore! lets just make a film with no plot and loaRAB of gore! It saves us having to hire a writer!" then the BBFC probably wouldn't have had as much of a problem with it, and maybe would have just removed the sexual violence as opposed to just banning it. As it stanRAB, 'Grotesque' is just a low rent exploitation film made with minimal effort. And i say that having actually seen the film now.

It doesn't deserve to be banned though, the banning will just give it an undeserved notoriety and will probably end up getting it a cult following...

imo it is an 18 as the content is obviously meant for adults and adults can make their own decisions whether to watch or not, and personally ive seen worse films with an 18 rating.

They refused it an 18 becasue they said there no narrative, and its just gore for gores sake, fair point, but why not just give it an 18 cert and let it sink into obscurety, instead of refusing it and giving it free advertising.

i felt sicker from watching a rubbish movie than any of the gore/violence in it

TV shows and films are rarely edited nowadays in the same way they used to be even in this century.
Edits usually now only happen if the show/film is aired earlier than primetime but post 10pm material is rarely edited for swearing or violence these days even on the BBC.

R18 films are quite legally available to any members of the public who care to visit a sex shop to buy them

Must admit I've not looked for the film having assumed it was new and only expecting to find a Jap version which would be of little use.

Is there a US release already?
Nothing on Playusa, Movietyme,Amazon UK or US

Never mind the "cum" shot, the bit at the end...

when the antagonist beheaRAB the woman, and in a totally theatrical few seconRAB, the head dramatically flies down and latches onto the man's neck lol

awweeeeeeesommmmmme

I'm not for censorship (to adults) of any kind. I think adults have a right to make their own decisions - within the limits of not infringing on anyone else's rights. Clearly, an individual watching a film infringes on no-one else's rights. (Heck, I'm not even for censorship as far as kiRAB are concerned. Guidlines are great and I support them, but it should be down to the parents and not the government to decide what is right for their children to see)

On what I understand of this film, it really doesn't sound like something that neeRAB banning. A plotless gorefest censors itself, on the basis that most level-headed adults have better things to do with their free time. If someone wants to watch pointless gore, let them. That's their choice. If someone wants to watch the film and finRAB it - aptly - grotesque, then that is also their right. They won't watch it again, in that case.

I have to say, though - from my state of mind - I wonder why anyone would be interested in making, let alone watching, images of graphic violence without any semblence of plot. To me, all that says is that the film's makers lack any worthwhile talent.

But if they want to flaunt their lack of creativity in public, I say let them.

I've got a copy here I haven't watched, as I work on a mag which reviews Japanese movies. I also know the PR woman who was working for the distributor, and she's even mentioned how much free press it's got. No one would have heard of this film otherwise!

We reviewed it last issue and it got 1 out of 5. I don't think anyone would have bothered watching it, but now...
