I believe he is. But that's not the question.

Omar strongly supports Latin players....as evidenced by his giving contracts to, among others Julio Franco, Jose Valentine...many others.

Make it a 2 parts question. Is Omar a good GM...and is this enhanced by his tendecy to sign Latin players?
Brett, maybe a bit more in it than that..you get more Latin players to blend with the Latins that you already have...so you end up with more. Can that be?

If you support Latin players because they are Latin, then that's borderline moronic. As it would be for anyone that looks at some one's culture ahead of their abilities.

If you support specific latin players because they are good and would support them regardless of nationality, then that's good.

That being said, signing K-rod (or any closer) for a large amount of money is a bit nuts because as it's been shown, pretty well anyone can do the job.

If Scot Shields was closing for the Angels instead of K-rod, I'm sure Shields would have been over 55 saves as well. It's about opportunity more than ability.

He could do better with some of his moves. I wouldn't have gone after Pedro the way he did, should have jumped on Lowe, should have gotten bullpen help years ago and he needs to sign another bat. After signing K rod and Putz, the Mets have fallen asleep at the wheel. They still need get Oliver Perez back and at least one more starter.

I think he could do better at times. Ben Sheets, Bobby Abreu would be a nice pick up. Dump Luis Castillo he went and got him 2 late. Overall I give him 70 out of 100. Go Mets!!!!!

Every General Manager for a pro team, no matter what sport, has been a genius at times and a dunce at times. It all depends on his latest transaction. Example: Ned Colletti of the L.A. Dodgers...Signs Andruw Jones to a huge two year contract (Dunce) and then gets Casey Blake and Manny Ramirez 1/2 way through the season to help get the Dodgers into the playoffs (Genius). You could do the same with Omar. I'm a Dodger fan and not familiar enough with the Mets right now to comment specifically. I'm sure he's signed some awesome players, Latin or otherwise, and has also signed some players (Latin or otherwise) that did not do so well, Dunce or Genius? Depends on his LAST transaction. Met fans will have to decide but you can apply that principle to any G.M.
