older 80's kawasaki with timing issue?

my friend has an old 80's kawasaki kz750 that he wants to sell me. i haven't seen it run yet, but he says it still does, but that the timing on it is way off. its $400, would this be a good buy, or is it a bad idea? could the engine be torn up from the timing?
