Oldboy

I got to see this film for free at my local UCI recently because of a ticket cock-up and I just had to post and say wow! I'll certainly be looking at the Korean films coming over here a bit more closely from now on if they're going to be as good as that one was!

Anyone else seen this?

I really want to see it but can't find anywhere in Norwich that is screening it. We have a UCI but it hasnt been listed for a few weeks!

OldBoy is a superb movie - one of the best of the last year - Korea is currenty making INCREDIBLE movies, check out Silmido and Taekguchi as well. Incidently Korean DVD's are the best in the world, the packaging and quality of the box sets and special editions even beats the Japanese releases. OldBoy is available as a region 3 (Korean) 2 disc edition and on 25th Nov it's coming as an incredible looking (handmade copper) box set - you can buy them from: www.yesasia.com and a good selection at cheap prices from cdwow

Oldboy was a severe let down, with obvious scenes made to grab headlines (like the squid eating and tonge cutting scene) the ending made no sense, the reason given for the kidnapp was lame. The only engaging part of the film involved Oldboy's relationship with the girl.

I haven't seen the film in the news at all apart from the odd review. Hardly scandalous. I thought it was all in line with the story. He wanted to eat something alive after being locked up for so long. No big deal really. I'm going in to a spoiler tag as I think we've spoiled it enough... (If anyone wishes to see the film for themselves I urge you not to read the spoiler)
The tongue cutting off was part of the story too. He had no wish to tell her the secret and he couldn't trust himself not to say anything to her, as we find out throughout the film - he talked too much. The reason of the kidnap was meant to be lame! The fact that something so seemingly minor and trivial as a sentence said to a friend could snowball into the sisters' death and the elaorate plan resulting in imprisonment and the brainwashing of the main character's daughter to effect the last gut wrenching scenes was for me one of the most disturbing aspects of the film! People should really mind their Ps and Qs... I thought the happy ending wasn't needed though and would have preferred to see him throw himself out of the window at the end or for it to end with the shooting in the lift. But hey there you go.
:)

I have been wanting to see Oldboy ever since I heard about it a few months ago however it still hasnt come to my local UGC in Cardiff but I hope I wont have to wait long to see it!

It wasnt the film I was expecting however I thought it was a great film that I really enjoyed. It was the first Korean film I have seen and I was very impresed by it. I still cant understand how somebody could not like this film!

Live squid eating is fairly common in Korea.

the girl? Don't you mean his daughter, or did you completely miss that.

PS another spectacular Korean movie is Natural City, the visuals are just superb.
