Old films - pre 1957

I like quite a few. As already mentioned, The Marx Brothers films. I also like the Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire 'Road' films. Also Crosby's Cat and The Canary.

I'm a big Danny Kaye fan. I just love Wonder Man.

Laurel and Hardy's Way Out West is a classic.

Can't remember when Calamity Jane was made, but that's another favourite.

Fans of Will should take a look around the fansites that still excist.

Will Hay Comic Genius is very good

"Next trains gone" is also pretty good it has biographies of Moor Marriott and Graham Moffatt as well as Will Hay.

There are a few more if you do a search, used to be a couple of yahoo groups too.

By the way have you noticed some of the german pupils he teaches in the goose steps out.

I won't reveal names to you just watch it, you are almost certain to see three familiar faces if observant enough.

I agree with a lot of ThinBoy's choices (even though we don't agree about Titanic :D) - the SF and spooky ones particularly.

A Matter of Life & Death is one of my favourite films.

There's one that I've only seen once but I have fond memories of called The Devil and Daniel Webster, would love to see it again.

Also for fans of "Oh Mr Porter" there is a showing at the Ritzy in Brixton, Sunday October 21st at 2pm. There will be an introduction before hand and a short clip from a work in progress :- "Next Train's Gone -T he Making of Oh, Mr Porter"

Is one of them Charles Hawtrey? He appeared in quite a few Will Hay films

He was a clever bloke. He discovered the white spot on Saturn (similar to the red one on Jupiter) and he gave Amy Johnson flying lessons!

Charles Hawtry is one of them!

Just for info about this film, some tapes actually have the best bits missing! An original film was cut to provide some clips for a TV programme, this editied film (Minus the best bits) was then used as a master for the Will Hay videos that came out!

So if you have the video and the is no sketch with Will and a (Famous) pupil talkning about Slough and Tough then it's the version missing the best bits!!!

(I think we should start our own thread!)

The book coming out has info on Will and Amy Johnson I believe.

Did you ever see him in "The Court Jester"?

I just LOVE that film. It's got to be one of my all time favourites. That utterly classic bit when he's supposed to be fighting a duel and they're going to poison his opponent's drink - "The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle but the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true" and then it get's changed to "the flagon with the dragon".

It STILL creases me up!

certainly I'd have to say the John Ford, trilogy of Cavalry films ,

Rio Grande
Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.

these are also IMO John Wayne's best films.

Films that i have enjoyed watching

Convict 99 (1938)
My Learned Friend (1943)
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
Scrooge (1951) with Alastair Sim
Rear Window (1954)
Laurel & Hardy cracks me up

I would have mentioned 12 Angry Men but that was 1957

I've heard that too. Also, the cuckoo clock speech wasn't in the Graham Greene book; Orson Welles made it up for the film.

Two of mine which I don't think have been mentioned yet are His Girl Friday and Night of the Hunter.

Yes indeed Charles Hawtry is one of the pupils the other two were familiar faces to an oldie like me but still a surprise.

Start a new thread for Will Hay certainly we can see if anyone still has something to say.
Maybe discuss some of his films, I did rather take over the original thread.

btw I think the ebay dvRAB I bought have the missing bit will confirm when my 3rd set arrives in the next day or so, note be prepared for older relatives to borrow these.
