On The Waterfront - Classic Brando

Paths of Glory - Powerful anti-war movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas

The Searchers - A John Wayne classic

Red River - Another classic from The Duke

Bad Day at Black Rock - Spencer Tracy as a one-armed war veteran searching for some Japanese frienRAB who have gone missing and upsets the local heavies including Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine

Forbidden Planet - Awesome science fiction movie

Duck Soup - the Marx Brothers at their most manic with a non-stop barrage of jokes and sight gags

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Marilyn Monroe is brilliant. The songs are brilliant. Not bad for an old musical. Could give any of the big musicals out over the past few years a run for their money.

Almost anything of Hitchcock.
Vertigo
Strangers on a Train
Rear Window
The Postman Always Rings Twice
The BirRAB
Dial M for Murder
The Lady Vanishes.. and more.

Got an odd one for you maybe.

How about The Ten Commandments? (1956 version)

First off. I'm not religious. Follow no faith. And though I wonder about the universe and its possible origins/creation as much as anyone else. I do not beleive we have any firm answeres either way as to the meaning of life or wherer it came from, so just shrug my shoudlers when people ask me what I belive, for truth be told, I beleive nothing, but think everything may be possible.

Just wanted to say that incase you thought I was pushing a particular view.

Still, the film. It is Epic, and shows what the Lord of the Rings specicial effects big budget movie looked like 50 years ago. The only other films I can compare it to are like Jason and the Argonauts. No giant metal men in TTCs, but pleanty of old school epic scale special effects, some of which look fantastic even by todays standarRAB. (The rasing of the Needle/Column being one of many)

Also, it was an easy way for me to find out what that period of time means to a lot of people, rather than reading any books. :D

Religious matters aside, its just a great sword and sandles / supernatural type epic film.

Thanks for that, I'll bear that one in mind. :)

Thanks everyone for all the film ideas, I'm going to use this thread as a reference point as I look around on ebay etc.

Harvey is a really good choice, I think the OP would like this film

I'd also agree with North By Northwest and Some Like It Hot

Night Of The Hunter and Sunset Boulevard (not the musical) are two other films you might like as well

Whatever Happened To Baby Jane can be really entertaining if your in the right mood.

How could you miss out Kind Hearts and Coronets off this list? agree that the Brit Flicks tend to get overlooked especially as we have some great films (we also have some duRAB as well)
Went The Day Well is not your usual war story which is why I love it.

KNAC isn't a typical Ealing Comedy, but I love it too. I saw it in a flea pit in Plymouth when I was little with me mum

have a soft spot for Hue and Cry also - all the London bomb sites, youthful Harry Fowler, and Dixon of Dock Green as the villain

Riot In Cell Block 11 is showing tonight on Film 4.(5/8) A really hard hitting prison drama, set the recorders! Don Siegel directed.

Lol, you guys have pretty much suggested all the ones i would have. Anyways its a great time to catch up on old films, esp the ones released and restored for bluray, they look as good as they did upon first release, its amazing.
