Do you think the old english actors should return or the new english dub actors? Please list your choices for the old characters and new ones.

FUNimation stated that they are trying to get their original cast back for Brotherhood. The only questionable voice actor is Aaron Dismuke, who has gone through puberty, as far as returning.

Honestly, I'd say bollocks to recasting. Takeshi Kusao was in his thirties when he went from voicing Future Trunks to the child Present Trunks. Dismuke is familiar with the role and many dub fans identity him with the character.

So I say retain the cast as is, sans for any who might have passed on.

I've heard his voice for the OVA clips.

Dismuke can still do it. It won't sound like the same Al, but it will still be Al.

Also, Al was the quick bloomer anyway.

FUNi played the Chibi Wrap Party short at Otakon and while Al still sounded like Al, his voice was MUCH raspier than in the TV series and movie. His voice worked for that short, but I'm not sure how well it'd do in the new series, especially considering Dismuke's rather childish-sounding reaction sounRAB (which were perfect for Al, by the way). If Brotherhood had Al in his mid-to-late teens, the voice would be perfect, but for a 10-year-old it doesn't sound right.

Dismuke MIGHT be able to go back to his old voice (or at least a reasonable facsimile) in a few years, but I worry about right now.

I'm sure that Funimation will try to get the cast from the first Full Metal Alchemist series. As others have mentioned, the only one who might be a problem with getting back is Aaron Dismuke due to puberty, which is understandable. However, I think that they'll still cast him as Al since most fans of the dub still identify him as Al. They could always try to alter his voice enough to make it sound closer to Al's, but I'm sure that they would want the original cast to return for all of those willing and able.

Any issues with Aaron's voice can always be handled with Melodyne and a good studio engineer. May not even need that if he's got good range.

Otherwise, you can bet that they'll get everyone back, even if it means flying people out or whatever. This is the cash cow, their best shot at more content on AS and so on. They won't slack on it.

No, it doesn't. I've read on other forums that some Japanese fans weren't too happy about that either.

Still, I agree to a point with Karl - if Funimation can get actors back to do their parts, they'll do everything within there power to do so. Aaron's situation is the only one that is clearly going to have to be dealt with and may end up in a recast (Aaron seems to think, from what I've read, the part will be recast). Karl's convinced this program to change voices would work but I'm not sure how realistic it would be for Funimation to go that way. It could be more expensive in practice to do that or they could run into a issue similar to the early use of WordFit and Anime dubs (IMO many early dubs that used the program managed to kill the vocal arabiance by overusing the program (aka - the dubs are really flat in places they shouldn't be)). There is also some issues with Holemheim's character as well (that was VA'd by Scott McNeil, whose Canadian. That worked OK with the first series because the part wasn't that big but if they're following the manga in FMA:B then the part is going to be much larger and I'm not sure they'll be able to bring Scott back in for that amount of time or not). Still, I do think most of the original English cast of FMA will return if it is at all possible.

McNeil should be able to do it, it's guranteed work after all.

And again, I would prefer no recastings. They don't do it in Japan, why should it be any different over here?

Don't expect Dameon Clarke back as Scar though. He was recast by J. Michael Tatum in the OVAs, and I doubt they can get him for the series. A couple of minor actors who seem to have dropped off the radar were recasted as well, through I doubt most people care whether or not Breda or Gracia sound exactly the same.

All the other principles should be available though. McNeil would be the hardest to get, but I'm sure he would be more then willing to work out some arrangment to record for Hoenheim again.

I think they tend to avoid that sort of thing, espicially for the important characters.

I mean, there's been three different Tenshinhan and four different R

No, it's just that Shinichiro Miki was considered "cooler" then Toru Ohkawa, and they wanted to give Roy a new image for the new show. I'm still not fond of that decision though.

And in defense of Japanese DBZ, they only recast when an old actor dies or is unavailable. You really think they would have replaced Hirotaka Suzuoki as Tien otherwise?

I think they wanted to make a point that this is the new FMA that's not at all connected to the first series that's why the majority of the cast are new, Romi and Rie are the two exceptions of course since NO ONE can replace them.
