Old Black and White Films

I'd just like to add a few of my favourites:

Arsenic and Old Lace - hilarious
The lady vanishes - one of my favourite Hitchcock films
It's a wonderful life - I know it's already been mentioned but it is truly fantastic
It happened one night - very funny

I could go on but I'd just send you all to sleep :o
 
The income earned from sales of an old B&W film on dvd would be peanuts compared to the ad revenue gained from a tv broadcast.

But as they have access to programming that brings in more ad revenue there's no room for these small earners in the schedule unless they open another channel for them

While Hollywood biggies make a good slice of their income from dvd sales the same cannot be said for old movies and tv shows where sales run only into thousanRAB
 
I even have the 2 Tarzan dvd packs with Johnny's movies in them.

Get the R1 of set one as it has a huge documentary on the series that the R2 does not have.

I remember Xmas in the mid 70's when the BBC showed one a day

The Ladykillers - I know The Ladykillers is in colour, but it's not proper colour, is it? Fabulous film.
 
Do you mean "Young And Innocent"? I thought I was watching a Harry Enfield spoof. The dance band in blackface make-up was a fascinating period detail, though. ;)

Nevertheless, a fine old Hitchcock thriller.
 
Brighton Rock was my set text for O level..........it's a wonderful novel by Graham Greene

Fantastic film..........'Dicky' Attenborough as the young gangster, Pinky.........

It's one of the all time classic British films..........
 
Admittedly though... I'm more of a sucker for the old musicals... :o

Absolutely spot on with those choices and I'd add "Some like it Hot" for comedy.

p.s In The Heat of the Night is in colour.
 
"The Enchanted Cottage" is another little gem. Not shown very often.

Was the Ghost and mrs Muir b&w? Loved that film- any old ghosst films really. Topper was great too.
 
Only film he ever directed IIRC and it's a classic!

Another b&w gem would have to be The Letter with Bette Davis at her absolute peak! "Ole popeye" may have chewed the scenery more often than not, but when she got the role to match her talent she was in a different league IMO........The Little Foxes was another one of her greatest parts and, of course, All About Eve.
 
Great Expectations (1946) is still one of my favourite films, such an incredible cast too. Sir John Mills, Jean Simmons and Sir Alec Guinness.


I also like ANY old pirate films in black and white, they just look fantastic :)
 
the old miss marples with magaret rutherford were and still are good entertainment for a wet sunday afternoon.
I rather like oh mr porter/ask a policeman both will hay films
which i find funny.
 
I LOVE old movies!
I watched "The Lady Vanishes" today, which even my 13 year old thinks is a good film. Or try ultra-creepy "The Spiral Staircase"
I love all the really old romantic films like "Portrait of Jennie", "The House in the Square" (aka "I'll Never Forget You") "The Ghost and Mrs Muir".
I also love all those amazing classics... "Now Voyager" "Mrs Miniver", "In Which We Serve" oh the list is endless. I spent a lot of time when I was younger with my Dad's old Nanny who was well into old films and we used to watch all of them. The great think about old films is the quality of the storytelling, where nowadays there is so much emphasis on effects and media hype
 
No problem! :) I didn't know the name of the other one anyway, like hobbes did. Stella Dallas has quite a similar theme to it too.

Beat the Devil was a kind of weird but likeable film, set in Italy.

And has anyone seen 'M'? I bought it but it seems quite disturbing!
