Old Black and White Films

I adore black & white films esp The Arsenal Stadium Mystery, Passport to Pimlico and Sunset Boulevard. I love the old Harold Lloyd ones too. Nothing better than settling down on the settee in front of the fire on a cold day with a big mug of tea, a plate of biscuits and a b&w film on the tv :D

Aaargh I did go back and search through before posting, but didn't spot your reply. Just seen it now...it was very late last night, & I mustn't have been reading properly, I'm sorry :(

You're right of course - and yes it was definitely only the Joan Crawford version I've seen, 1959, in colour....don't know why I remembered it in b&w. Thanks :) & sorry again :o

B&W films 'boring'?.

What has the colour to do with the quality of a film?.

Many if not most of the greatest films ever made are black and white.

I will add some foreign b&w classics no one else has:

The Seven Samurai
Rashomon
Rififi

Unfortunately the reality is that the masses dont want B&W which is why UK Gold, then Granada+ and then Bravo removed it.

With the exception of a few sitcoms and genuine movie classics B&W stuff wont get shown in prominent slots.

Sad really but i guess kiRAB don't want to watch Johny Weismuller any more. I loved him..... Sat at home with a hot water based noodle snack. Bet you loved them too eh dave?

I watched Oliver Twist in B & W the other day on FilmFour. Really was quite good, and was interesting when you consider when it was filmed and the makers closer to victorian times may have depicted the environments more accurately.

I love black and white films.

I hate that so many have been colourized for DVD or VHS and there is no option of buying the original black and white version. I accidently bought a colourized version of a black and white movie without realising it was colourized and the movie print was absolutely appalling. It was terrible to watch and I was so annoyed.

Can't we just leave them black and white, like they were intended?

Just noticed this thread..........agree with you totally Porcupine about Greer Garson being a stunning looking woman........she's become one of the forgotten greats IMO along with Irene Dunne and Jean Arthur (btw, if anyone gets the chance to see Easy Living with Jean Arthur in the starring role, do yourself a favour and watch it....a classic forgotten comedy IMO)

Well there you hit the nail on the head, why allow us to see it on TV when they can fill a lot of the schedule with cheap tat and sell the stuff people do probably want to see ( the old classics have a large following )
