Old Black and White Films

Great film with a powerhouse performance from Charles Laughton.............speaking of whom, his performance in, and indeed the entire 1939 production of, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is worth hunting down......another fantastic film!

Hello!

I love 'Roman Holiday'.
My best film.(I don't know much about films though)

The scene when the princess goes back to the palace and kiss the journalist(Gregory Peck) still makes me cry.
Very very romantic and beautiful.

Some of the finest films were in B & W.
I'm particularly a fan of that most influential of all sub-genres, the crime Noir of the 40s and 50s.

Check out the following. They rank with anything on current release:

Touch Of Evil (directed by one of the cinemas true geniuses - Orson Welles - the film is now fully restored with a Directors cut)

Night Of The Hunter (a visual masterclass from start to finish - unequalled).

Gilda (what red-blooded male could resist Rita Hayworth at her best. Cinemas finest Femme Fatale)

Scarlet Street (challenging the Hayes Code at every turn - Edward G Robinson is magnificent)

The Killers (way ahead of its time)

Double Indemnity (the Noir template)

Laura (another beguiling Femme Fatale).

My favourite film ever I think!

I also love Angels with Dirty Faces, White Heat, The Killing, On The Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire.. there are so many excellent black and white films in fact.

Yes, I think I mentioned it earlier.

It's years since I last saw it, but I thought it was an excellent film. A fairly simple, but disturbing, story. Its main strength is the increasing tension as the crowd close in on the Peter Lorre character, and his fear building up. Really atmospheric.

I think it made Peter Lorre's name as an actor, and set him up for the sort of slimy characters he played in Hollywood.

Fritz Lang directed, I think.

Hope I haven't missed reference to these in the thread

Did anyone see "Sweet and Innocent" and "Obsession"yesterday on BBC2? Fabulous wallow in nostalgia and full of interest. All the old actors, Robert Newton - Naunton & Wayne (the two cricket chaps from "The Lady Vanishes" who have important roles in these two films)

Someone mentioned "A Matter of Life and Death" with David Niven Don't forget it was only Heaven which was Black and White, Earth was in glorious technicolour as the French dandy Conductor marvelled at.

If you exclude B&W films you would miss out on the Marx bros. Greta Garbo, James Cagney, countless others:D

Can't beat an oldie on a rainy day.
Maybe its just nostalgia but I have great memories of Charlie Chan movies on a Friday evening on BBC2. Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan films from the early forties on Saturday mornings. Will Hay and Miss Marple. Passport to Pimlico, Old Bette Davies films like Now Voyager.
Screwball comedies like Carole Lomvard in My Man Godfrey and Busby Brekley musicals with their fantastic designer sets.

Melodramas like Stella Dallas and potboiling film noirs like Mildred Pierce with Joan Crawford or Lana Turner.

Love old films.

Socha:

'There was one I hadn't heard of before that looked interesting called Brighton Rock.'

Really?. See, the cultural literacy of this country......grumble grumble.

Seriously, it is one of THE great British films, let alone British gangster films. Attenborough's chilling performance as 'Pinky' is STILL talked about as one of the greats....a fantastic performance.

Well worth a watch.

Have you ever wathced any of the old black and white films ? And do you never relax ?

Having commented on your other thread , just what is it with you and the word black ?????

I saw that on tv when I was a kid and it scared the life out of me  I haven't seen it since and only last week I found a copy on dvd at EBay, watching it tomorrow!
