Old Black and White Films

No one has mentioned the classic: The Appartment.

Quite a cynical, modern day feel to it.

I love Humphrey Bogart films, James Cagney and also the classic Marx Bros films.

To push the boat out even further for those prepared to brave a SILENT movie Id suggest Metropolis, or The General.

Edit...it probably adRAB to the vividness of the horror. So scrub Peeping Tom off the list. I still like it 'though.
 
A few months ago, late at night, there were a series of "Falcon" films, originally starring George Sanders, then later by someone else (playing his brother, I think, but in the same style) - I presume George Sanders had moved on to better things. They were typical B-movie hokum, but still fun enough.

Also, a series of Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films. Very anti Third Reich - a product of the time.

I agree with a lot of previous posters:

The Third Man, Citizen Cane.

Again, not certain if B & W, but "The Rope", "Strangers on a Train".

Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple Films (any similarity to the character created by Agatha Christie is not even coincidental, it is totally non-existant).

One that caught my eye recently when it was on Film 4 - "Green for Danger"
 
"On the beach" is my favourite. It's so eerie, and the futility of the actions of all the characters is mind-blowing when the film approaches the end.
 
It's amazing how many old films ITV own the rights toi in their massive library, yet they never see the light of day, instead it feels like ITV repeat the same few films over and over .
 
I love 'The Night Of The Hunter', it has the lot, great plot, characters, actors and it is beautiful to look at. Even when I watched it as a child I knew I was watching something special.
 
I wish there were a satellite channel devoted entirely to showing old black and white British films.

Personally, I can't get enough of them. Just transported to another age.
