Old Black and White Films

YES!!!Watch the older issue of Titanic with Kenneth More in
lead role--it's thrilling-gripping-realistic! The newer release
with Leonardo De Caprio & Kate Winslet is good! However -
original Black & White version is more- as I said -realistic!
Not just a story of Titanic sinking as a backdrop to a steamy
love affair. If you get the chance to---watch it,you'll love it!!

Off the top of my head my favourites would include

Citizen kane
12 Angry men
A place in the sun
Wuthering heights
How green was my valley
Angels with dirty faces
The blue Lamp
A wonderful life
The best years of our lives
The victors.

I think its really sad that a lot of young people don't appreciate classic films and as soon as they see its in black and white they groan and switch off!
I'm 19 and I love classic films from the 30s and 40s, my favourite actress being Ginger Rogers and my favourite films are Carefree. Swing Time, The Philadelphia Story, Go West and Monkey Buisiness!

School for scoundrels with Alistair Sim and Terry Thomas is a great film,my only complaint about b+w films being showed on tv is that it,s always the same ones, theres loaRAB of old British films which havent been shown in decades.

Apparently a remake of School for scoundrels is in the offing, don't expect it to be anything like the original though, the worlRAB changed a lot since then.
Edit dozy me it's been done turned out to be a rotter of a film apparently, no surprises there then.

Asphalt Jungle with Sterling Hayden.

Oh film buRAB.
Guns, Gangsters and Getaways: The Story of the British Thriller
BBC2 9:05pm - 10:45pm

New series celebrating the nation's role as a major player in world cinema for more than 100 years, beginning with its most notable contributions to the thriller genre. Stars including current James Bond Daniel Craig, Guy Ritchie, Ewan McGregor, Bob Hoskins and Richard Attenborough discuss homegrown success stories including The Third Man, The Long Good Friday and Shallow Grave, while Michael Caine recalls his role in Get Carter.

Black and White, subtitles, matters not a jot, a good film is a good film IMO, can't stand musicals though instant turn off/over.

When was the last time a Mr Hulot or Will Hay was aired?
Surely some of the more minor stuff must be dirt cheap for TV channels to air.

Just remembered another great forgotten female star and her best film..........Jane Wyman in Johnny Belinda alongside the great and vastly underused and underrated Lew Ayres (All Quiet On The Western Front is his greatest moment in film IMO and one of the true landmark films too!)

I always feel sad when you hear about the death of one of the Holywood studio greats. Olivia de Haviland is the only classic film star still living that I can recall.

LoaRAB are now almost forgotten- Norma Shearer and Betty Grable, Claudette Colbert and Paulette Goddard, Veronica Lake and the wonderful Margaret Lockwood.

I've tried to find it on here but with no luck:

http://www.britmovie.co.uk/genres/index.html

That site's nice to browse anyway to bring back memories, if you haven't come across it before.

Another melodrama that I'd recommend, even though it is way over the top, is Joan Crawford in Strait Jacket:

Lucy Harbin has been in an asylum for 20 years after axing her husband and his mistress during a crime of passion, witnessed by her young daughter, Carol. While trying to renew ties with Carol, who is now a young woman about to be married, heaRAB begin to roll again. Is Lucy repeating her past?

I dont like Brief Encounter much. I think both the main characters are selfish and unlikeable.
Love "12 angry men" so much I bought it on DVD

Suspicion is one of my favourite films, someone said earlier That Hitchock changed the ending. Does anyone Know how He planned for the movie to end? I thought that the twist changed the whole feel of the film and made it a great film.

I always promise myself that I'll make an effort to watch some of these older 'classic' films, but whenever I try I get bored quickly and turn over to Eastenders of some other tripe :o

Any recommendations for some that are worth watching?

Gentleman's Agreement with Gregory Peck is on C4 at 1pm now for anyone who's able to watch it.

And Green for Danger at 5.05pm with Alistair Sim

I think we're looking for films that are more than just 2 years old folks. :p

Although if we're suggesting more recent b&w films as well I suppose you can add Schindler's List to the reco pool. Assuming there's anyone left who hasn't watched it yet...
