OK, so why isn't the public screaming for alternative energy NOW?

I think you misread that

the renewables cost more than the coal/nuclear. I'm not saying that I dont want to see more renewables but we need to make it able to compete on par price wise with the coal and nuclear industries for the end users before it can take off

Just because people scream something is, doesn't make it so.

Nuclear is very safe. One major incident. And we all know what caused that. 3 mile caused no radiation damage (that could cause harm). The people who have died on oil rigs, gas plants, coal power plants etc far outnumber Chernobyl.

I'd happily live next door to a modern reactor. People who think they are unsafe do not care about facts.

because even if 5000 people showed up for a rally, nothing would happen

you need to get militant before people start paying attention

employs moar cuz its labor intensive, requires less capital to start/run, makes more $$ per acre cuz its quality wood

its a fucking horrible plan

New technologies are being developed every day that increase efficiency and potential power capture.

What if everyone drove an electric car and had solar panels on their house?

Reduce is the first of the 3 Rs. Sadly in our consumption driven society, that is the last thought of

I know renewables cost more. It's because we haven't focused hard enough on the technology to make it cheaper to manufacture and develop than coal/oil/gas

its the cheapest solution, too.

i can go microhydro, solar or wind on my property

but its cheaper for me to use less and pay $25month to the utility for my electricity...i can never repay it if i went alternative.

yes Nuclear is the best way to go, but we can thank the russians and our 3 mile island incidient for why we will never have it here...

IT IS UNSAFE

I'd love to see us build 50 or 100 new nuclear plants and go all-electric. Problem is, we don't have a good enough means of portable storage yet. Sure, maybe I can go 100 miles on a charge, but then I have to wait hours before I can go again. We need batteries with enough energy density to match a tank full of gasoline, and with the same ease of "refill". Some sort of swappable, rechargeable fuel cell, maybe.

In the meantime, we need to stop fucking around with hybrid cars in their current form. Having two separate drivetrains in a vehicle is stupid. What we need is gasoline-electric cars. Give me an electric car with a gasoline engine that's tuned to run at maximum efficiency at a fixed speed and does nothing but charge batteries, and I'll buy one.

Of course they do.

Take away all the subsidies you want, it's still more economically viable than any alternative. Less so than if the subsidies are involved, but it's still better.

and the reason is that people dont want to pay more to do the same things

take electricity for example. When I lived in upstate NY me electrical rate was 4 TIMES what it is here in Illinois. Up there my power was almost entirely from renewable sources but here its 50/50 coal and nuclear. Its fucking ridiculous

The biggest change is in areas with natural forest climax ecology, you'd have to plant forest molded farms, so mostly tree crops with a harvestable undergrowth. And that's basically everywhere east of the Mississippi, that would be something to see, the whole east covered with forested farms.

It would be perfectly feasible if the government would back the fuck off and let people build. It's expensive and needs government intervention because the government made it that way.
