Ok. So its been tossed around, and debated.
But I dont think anyone's ever given a solid answer that i read.

So those with the flashed PDA's, what can and cant you do.

I know you can access gmail on the browser, and have full functionality thru the web interface. Do it now on the nokia.

I know you can forward other email addresses to your cricket email address. Do that as well on one priority work email address on my server.

What about a solid answer on POP (or imap) email accounts?
Are the correct data ports open to allow a smartphone's built in email programs to check pop accounts on either standard or custom ports?

Has anyone functionally used a POP email account to send and recieve directly from the device, either using built in or add-on software?

I'm trying to find something right now that will work on the nokia just so I can figure out of the ports are open.
 
With the proxy in place we are unable to get the smartphones to do OTA PoP email. I havent been able to get my smartphone to check it anyway. You are able to check hotmail/gmail/yahoo online via the cricket portal or their mobile site.

Did some quick testing and found the answer. I ended up creating a new email address on my server, [email protected] and forwarding it to both the cricket phone, and the sidekick's dedicated gmail account (which of course i can check via Wap as well.) I'll have a q up and running on cricket as early as thursday, but It's going to replace my wife's razr which might not make it till then. I'm getting my treo the following week... And maybe I'll figure some other thing to do. I really don't want to have to start carrying the 'kick around again just for email.
 
I have a Verizon Samsung i730 that was flashed to cricket. It had windows mobile 5 on it. I had some guy in New Mexico program it for me. It used to get pop email thru outlook up to 2 weeks ago.

It would download email just like a blackberry and was awesome.

Cricket did something 2 weeks ago that stopped everyone from be able to get email. I am not sure what it is, but i think it is gone forever.
 
... I'm not sure that you were actually getting Email. If your WM Based Device is plugged into a PC it will get Email through the computer's internet connection (As jammis said) and i never have gotten POP or SMTP based Email to work via Cricket's internet connections. This is probably because they have the POP and SMTP ports closed.

i setup my IMAP4 for my AOL email account and it senRAB/receives just fine as long as im on WiFi. i also setup a POP3 for my gmail account just to see if it would work too. it doesnt work on the cricket dial out and im assuming this is the subject and issue of this thread.

if im in a wifi area, all i have to do is open up my POP3 or IMAP4 and click on send/receive and bam, i have all my email at hand.

im a total noob when it comes to this stuff and since ive been an AOL user since '95, i havent had any reason to ever use Outlook. heck, i didnt even know what it was until recently.

point being, i just followed the instructions that Microsoft.com gave me and what AOL.com gave me and it worked.


of course, i could have just written all that and you brainiacs are talking about something totally different.

BTW, verizon branded xv6700, "Tyrone in New Mexico" flashed, windows 5, etc.

Tyrone is a smart kat and i totally agree w/ billbarnes that he knows what he is doing.

I was definitely getting email to my outlook thru Cricket. The phone called some # every 1 minute and it downloaded all the new emails. I was never connected to my computer.

It was all wireless.
 
I have been trying to get around email issues, figure out why all the texting errors and sort thru rumor and enuendo. Regarding cricket and all and will contact each of my clients with any relevant updates and factual answers I can come up with. But its a process is all I can say for now....
Hello by the way to the ones of you I recognize I730 with email issues, ppc6600 with sms issues glad to see yall actively searching for answers cuase thats how I figured all this stuff out see ya later jpinm when u Q gets in.

But more to the point Yes up until 8/8/07 for me. I had my xv6600,xv6700 setup to d/l pop3 email. Every 60 seconRAB since 1/12/07 when I first posted and proved you could get mobile web on a flashed pda for cricket.

They always had smtp or out going mail blocked but mms was a totally feasable workaround. Gmail is fine but it gives errors when I have my mms as the forwarding address.

My isp gives me spam errors because i get so many ebay meraber emails it blocks me from forwarding to my mms for 30 min at a time so my hanRAB are full with flashing,repairing and trial and error attempts around some of these issue so any suggestions that any one has that I can sit up and try all day and night let it out and ill try it out.
 
if you have your own mail server you can make it work....

One by forwarding your emails to your mail server then having your mail server set up on either port 80 or 8080 and cricket will connect because those ports are opend..
 
given that fact, couldn't we figure out what port is used for the pop filter @ gmail, and force the phone to open that port via the proxy using the HTTPS proxy field or WAP proxy field?

Presumably, since the phone doesn't use a firewall, the proxy simply opens the port for all services, right?
 
you've given me an idea...

an idea like setting up a pop or imap server on my dedicated machine, and maybe passing out a few accounts?
 
The only reason i'm still awake this early, is i'm waiting for the fedex guy.
Read the post i just made... and do you know if any ports other then 80 and 8080 are open?

I'm going to either try and configure a second pop server on my dedicated machine (which may or may not work, need to check with my host) or, since pop traffic uses little bandwidth, i may just get an older machine to plug into my network at home (comcast 12rabps buisness class connection) that i can configure as a POP or IMAP server and be able to open the specific port required.
 
I had to just go ahead this a.m and order a new sdio wifi card for my 6600. And take advantage of rio rancho's city wide wifi coverage until further notice because it is important to my business to get email on my phone thru pop3.
