ok so does this mean the blackberry has a bad ESN?

ok so this guy dropped his blackberry curve in the salt water then rinsed it off with water aha and dropped it in my bag. i got it to turn on today but it deleted everything from the phone and i texted him and told him that its pretty much broken because he said he only wanted it for the numbers in it but they were deleted already so he told me not to bother sending it. because he switched to a new phone, does that mean the esn on this phone is bad/ not clear? i have no idea who he is i just found his number so i cant just tell him to reopen the esn if it is bad
