Im not looking to beat any speed records but...... I can only get 65mph out of my 06 GZ250. Love the bike and Im getting 72 mpg. I've been told that if I go up one tooth on my front spocket it will increase my top speed about 5 to 8 mph. The bike has 15 teeth now. Im talking about going to 16. The extra speed sounds good but where there is good on one side there must be bad some where. Can anyone give me some sound advice on this issue? I know buy a bigger bike. No way. I really like this size of bike. I dont mind spending a little extra on it. Any help would be appreciated.

No need to buy a bigger bike. You will lose a little bit of power from it. No big deal though, on a 250, it's worth the trade.

Well HOG SLAYER, I just made that change on my bike(Marauder VZ 800) but concept should be the same. My change was 16 to a 17 tooth. My low end "seemed" not to change, still plenty of dig from a hole shot. Best results were mid range and high end where revs were reduced for the same ground speed, also gained a little on mpg. Good luck with yours. Jim

I'm looking into doing the same for my 2001 VZ800. It pulls hard enough in the lower gears but when I cruise on the highway, I feel as if I'm flogging the Hell out of the poor girl. Does anyone know what the stock number of teeth on a 2001 VZ800 are? I've been trying to Yahoo! the information

The Marauder motor will run at those highway RPMs all day long and not miss a beat. Besides these 'high' RPMs arn't really all that high anyway, you're still way far away from the rev limiter. Geez why are cruiser guys so afraid to run the motor? :-D :-D

RE: The GZ250

How difficult is this to do at home, or should you take it in to the shop, and how much does changing the front sprocket cost?

Any photos?

As well, would you need to change the chain to go along with the new sprocket, and would your gears change a bit? Im thinking yes.

More info?

In my opinion, adding teeth to one sprocket without changing the other only increases torque and low end. Check the gear ratio of the 2 sprockets by dividing the number of teeth on the large sprocket by the number on the small sprocket.

Here's a great calculator that you can use, basically an excel spreadsheet but it should give you an idea

I did go up 1 tooth on my front sprocket. I love the results. It increased the gear changing by 10 mph on all the gears. That helps in traffic. 4th gear kicks in at 45mph and i can ride it to 60mph before it starts to rev to high. I do believe the power I have on forth is great because I can be going 50 mph and not rev the motor and still have plenty of throtle left if I need to get out of the way.I dont think the over all speed was increased . I can go 65mph with no problem. I have taken it on the exspressway and done 75mph before it starts to sound like the rpm's are getting high. Only the steep hills will slow me if i can get a running start.I weigh 210 pounds. Would I do it again? YES!!
