OK I have a 1996 chevy lumina and it is running hot?

Only one fan under the hood kicks on . Are they both suppose to kick on at same time?
I was sitting still when it started running hot . It was ideling about four minutes.
 
You should also have an electric fan that will kick on when it needs to, but it wont run at the same time all the time. I would check your thermostat first..Its the cheapest easist place to start (if you arent leaking antifreeze or are low on antifreeze that is).. If you are mechanically inclined, take it out and you can test it by putting it in water and slowing heating it up. When it reaches 180* F it should pop open, if it doesnt that is your problem. If its fine, could be something else like the water pump, or a problem with your radiator....If you are not mechanical, take it to a shop and have it checked out.

The things you can do yourself is just check you fluid level and make sure you have enough, and then watch for leaks. Other than that, I would take it in..
 
No one fan kicks on at 215 f and the other kicks on at 234 f. If you are driving above 25 mph the fans need not come on. So if your car is overheating while you are drive it over 25 mph the fans Will have nothing to do with it. We do need a little more information as to when it over heats. Sitting at idle, driving under load(up hills) or just cruising?
Under load could be a plugged rad, at idle could be the fans,shortly after starting could be the Tstat. Lots it could be but need as much info as you can give.
 
: If your coolant level is good in the overflow and in the radiator I would say your fan isn't coming on, so what i would do is take the radiator out for a while, or until winter time, and if it still doesn't work that honey u need to take that car to a mechanic!
