My painting teacher recommended that we buy flake white for our figure painting class. I have Lefranc Extra-fine, and the first thing I noticed is that it's much heavier than the other paints. I was doing some research about what goes into flake white, and some people were saying that it is very toxic and flake white "replacement" is sometimes used. But I also read that flake white is the alternative to lead white, which is too dangerous to use.
So how dangerous is flake white? What do they put in it exactly? Is it more toxic than titanium white? What about compared the cadmiums? I'm just trying to get an idea of what kind of stuff I'm dealing with, because oil painting makes me a little paranoid.
