This seems like an ever-increasing clusterfuck.
 
I don't think this thing is going to work at all. How can they can suck up the oil fast enough to keep the pressure from blowing whatever thing they put on top off?

The equipment we use is surprisingly strong, the real question is can BP come up with something on short notice that will work. As far as pressure goes, coming up with something to contain the pressure is relatively easy...doing it and implementing it at a depth of 5000 ft, thats quite another.

I've worked on pipelines flowing gas at 5000 psi. Some plants and refineries have 30 or 40 THOUSAND horsepower on tap to pack pipelines under immense pressure...

Hopefully this will work, I'm not sure it can contain all of it because getting a clean enough cut on the existing pipe will be the biggest challenge, then securing it without igniting a plume of explosive gas would be the next major issue. But this is doable. Lets just hope/pray it works then lets get BP out of our fucking waters for at least ten years.
 
this is a ridiculous response, we need to "drill baby drill" it can be done safely, our oversight sucks and BP cut corners its disgusting but true. We can and should be drilling. We need to stop temporarily to find out what happened and make changes to our regulations and procedures, the presidents 6 month moratorium is warranted but to mock the industry and those who want US energy is ridiculous.
 
No matter how long it takes to contain the leak, BP will not be banned from drilling offshore. That would be shooting ourselves in the foot if the federal government did that.
 
Considering that the United States is one of the biggest consumers of oil, banning one of the biggest oil companies from drilling of shore to fulfill our demand for oil will cause gas prices to go up. Money talks. They're a multi-billion dollar corporation, and there's no way their lobbyists would allow a ban to happen, spill or no spill. Politicians will be wooed away from any ban.
 
No sir you are wrong, if you think drilling would stop you are not informed at how the process works. BP is drilling because they subsequently outbid Exxon, Chevron, COP and others in the US leasing auctions. Others would gladly drill, it would mean slightly less upfront money for the government because it would result in decreased competition but if it prevents these sort of catastrophes, I'm all for it. We as a nation need to send a message that we want to use and extract our resources in a RESPONSIBLE manner and anyone who fails to do so must pay the consequences of their irresponsible actions.

I dont think they'll get much more than a slap on the wrist either because they are HUGE contributors to Obama's campaign.

But that doesn't mean I'm wrong with regard to what should happen in this instance and you dodged (neatly I might add) my point about leasing
 
No one is against US independence from foreign oil or energy period but those who champion to drill whenever wherever come off as disregarding the potential dangers and how small the margin for error really is.

Sure major accidents in the industry don't happen all time but when they do its totally horrible and the effects can last for many years. Its clear that BP put money over safety and the gov't was only too eager to enable that. Until we can get a handle on that end of it...drilling is too dangerous to do just anywhere
 
Leasing... ok.

BP is leased to that site for a certain amount of time. I supposed the federal government could withdraw that lease, at which point BP would sue to the Supreme Court. It would be an ironic change of fortunes if the justices decided to side with BP in a "breach of contract" type ruling. It all depends on the ideologies on the justices, though.
 
I agree, it definitely appears at this point, BP put money far over safety and the environment, this is unacceptable. Drilling is not too dangerous if industry best practices are followed, if just one or two corners had not been cut we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

There are some 3600 rigs in US waters in the GOM. This is the first major or even moderate incident in 30 or 40 years.

Lumping the entire industry and those that want US oil into a basket of morons that ignore the environment is incorrect. I understand this is OT but I take this particularly seriously, I guess because i have a fair amount of time in this industry.
 
You know, if this drill site was closer to land or hell even on land and the same explosion happened, it would have been capped the same day.
