There is a thread about the new Dredd film but as this is big news for Dredd fans I thought it was worth starting a new thread.

This is dated today so I guess this is 100 percent official.

The Wellington-born actor told TV3 movie show Reel Late with Kate that he had officially been given the role, saying: "Yes, it's true, I am
the Law". He added that he was "thrilled to bits" about landing the
role.

If you're not a fan of Dredd (comics tend to have fairly low readerships) it won't be such big news but in the comic world Dredd is quite iconic so the casting is a big deal. I'm sure Urban will be better than Stallone's Dredd.

I actually thought that Stallone's Dredd wasn't too bad, It was just the rest of the film that was c%$p. Especially Rob Schneider's comic role in it.

Any remake will be better than the original so long as they don't play it for laughs. A humourless hard hitting gritty film with an 18 certificate is what I'd like to watch at the flicks. Not some PG or 15 rated effort. I've had enough of the cheesy one liners that the heroes say to their victims as they shoot them.

Too short (what is he, 5.8, 5.10? Dredd should be 6 foot minimum and that's without the built up boots.

Too mumbly.

Too visable, do NOT remove the helmet damnit.

:D

It's not been officially mentioned at Comic Con - I don't think it's totally official.

I'm sure there will be some press conference at Comic Con if they want to hype his casting. "New Dredd actor revealed!" That kind of thing.

Er, apparently Comic Con ended yesterday. :o Just saw that on a webpage. I guess he won't get a press conference after all. Well it's just a comic character, don't need to make a song and dance about it. :D

Well this looks promising. According to the Imdb website (cut and pasted):

"Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we

Why do people always have this cliched old 'visual' notion of an actor not resembling their vision of a character...before the film has even been made?

We all know there are various methoRAB by which people can be altered via make-up, costumes, padding, working out in the gym, using certain camera angles etc to make them seem either taller or shorter.

Then of course there is CGI (look at the actors playing the hobbits in the LOTR movies).

There are many, many different methoRAB by which an actor can be made to resemble the physical attributes of a certain character...and that's actually the easy part. (Providing, of course, that they are not completely physically unsuitable...such as someone like Danny De Vito, for example).

The hard part is finding an actor that can embody the character convincingly...there is no point in the actor being a dead ringer for the character in every other way if they are just not suitable for the role, if they cannot make you believe that they ARE that character.
