Off work with Bad Sciatica , Right Leg pain.. Help

I am a 47 yo very active male that lifts, runs, bikes, hikes and well you get the picture. I have had back issues on and off for the last 20 years or so, mostly in the thoracic area, but a couple of years ago lower back started to flare up and rest and a variety of exercises kept it at bay. Lately, however, the lower back pain has been getting worse and I WILL be getting addressed surgically. Just a matter of time. Many threaRAB and sites (chiro, etc) talk about non-invasive therapy, but in my hurable opinion (IMHO) when you start experiencing signs and symptoms as you are displaying there is NOTHING short of surgery that will correct it and let you move on with your life productively. Caveat, get a few opinions, do your homework and make sure you feel comfortable moving forward. These sites are filled with people that come to vent (nothing wrong with that) and they give the impression (oftentimes) that surgery will lead to a life of misery. Surgery, if properly performed will make you wake up scratching your head and asking yourself why in the heck you waited so long IMHO. I have let my thoracic pains go so long because I taught my son (yes, my 8 year old son) how to crack my thoracic area-he is now 24 and NO chiro has EVER been able to match his ability to release the thoracic area. Unfortunately, he can't fix my lower back. Good luck with everything and MOVE forward. I think you will be happier. Minimally-invasive techniques these days make it such that it is out-patient and minimal downtime.

Personally I would go with the surgeon you know and trust. If anything happens to you and you had the surgery say 3 hours away, who will help you? Surgeons don't take on other people's work except for rare occasions- other doctor died, you've moved far far away..and even then it's dicey. Good luck.

Hopper,

You have to realize that the successful surgeries are out living their lives as they should be. The people who have issues and struggle to have a decent life are posting on the boarRAB. Just something to consider. There are a few of us who had successful sugeries (myself included) that stick around to offer help.

I see your point. With back surgery you already have enough to think about. Going out of town does add to potential headaches. I keep telling myself. If this doc. is a spine and brain specialist surely he can complete a discectomy competently. Thanks for responding.
