off-roading essentials for my future jeep?

Im hopefully getting a 95-98 wrangler for my first car this summer. I definitely want to take it off-roading. What are some essential upgrades i need to add to take it on moderate trails. I've heard armor and protection are a MUST, but im only 15 (turning 16 this july) and will hopefully get a job. Also, im still looking for jeeps so any tips on buying? I know Tj's are better than YJ's and that the 4cyl is dominated by an I6 but if i got a 4 cylinder Yj, what would i have to do to make it off-raod capable? Thanks
