Off-Model Episodes

Are there episodes of your favorite anime which look wildly different from the rest of the series?

Are there episodes like Vandread episode two, where the characters are drawn in a way inconsistent from any other episode?

Are there episodes like Samurai 7 episode seven, where the animation quality suddenly plummets?

What are your thoughts?

Yugioh 5D's: Every single episode. lol

Here's a well known one:
Gurren Lagann: Episode 4. I think I heard a rumor that it caused an internet uproar or something.

Well, there's "good" off model and "bad" off model. There are certain episodes of, say, Ghost in the Shell SAC which look far more pleasing than the original character designs.

And then of course you have your mass produced Shonen Jump shows which often feature episodes featuring many horribly deformed, sketchy or unrecognizable designs.

Yu Yu Hakusho Episodes 4 (the one with the fire in Yusuke's house and for YYHA fans, the ep with the "Neighorhood Watch Committee) and 58 (the second part of Hiei vs Bui) are increidbley very noticably off model, making the characters look a lot more cutsey and less edged then they normally are. There are off and on episodes of animation in the show in general but those are the two that stick out as being the most off model by far.

Really? I thought that DBZ had about four great animation teams, one decent one, and one really bad one. And that episodes 96 and 278 were draw by the okay one. You want a terrible looking DBZ episode then go look at episode 156.

There didn't really seem to be too many good teams used during the battle with Freeza. Piccolo, Freeza, and Vegeta have the triangle look going on throughout that entire section of the arc. I remeraber #278 was just absolutely terrible looking based on how the Super Saiyan hair looked. The next two episodes were the best teams, though.

Funny you bring this up, the last ep of FMA Brotherhood to air on AS i felt was one of those episodes, just don't like the fluid style anime gets sometimes for bigger action oriented eps(Naruto/Bleach to name a few)

Rurouni Kenshin did that, but from what I can remeraber, compared to other long running shonen series there weren't that many moments where characters looked down-right hideous. Kenshin and Shishio's first encounter and then Kenshin vs Hiko (Aoshi vs that old man.. I can't think of his name for nothing) are some moments that really stuck out. It's a good thing those fights were good (or interesting).

Yu Yu Hakusho seems to be one of those rarities for me. I don't know if it seemed like this to anyone else, but to me it seemed like with each passing arc/saga the character models were improving. Honestly, I thought it started out with poor artwork and gradually builded up, and looked really good by the time it all came to an end, despite the colors looking very bland.

And then there's Ghost in the Shell: SAC. (best series ever) Let's not get it twisted. I don't think there was ever anything wrong with the models or animation (I compare everything to this). But there were some episodes (by some I mean like 2 or 3) where you can tell it was either drawn by another team or someone had a lazy day. (And even on their lazy days the models still came out to look really good) Like I said, I don't think they were bad, but you can notice it though, that's all I'm saying.

And then there's, of course, Bleach and Naruto (No where near my favorites). Even during the canon parts they've had some horrible moments. (DBZ as well, but I don't know what's real and what's not, but don't care at this point either) It's been a while since I've seen both (I think about 2 months) so I don't know if either one has improved or not.
