Odometer Speedometer Not Working Check Engine Light on Chrysler Town and Country 2000?

Hi I have a Chrysler Town and Country minivan with 120K miles. Yesterday the check engine light came on and the speedometer and odometer stopped working. All other instrument panel items are functioning. Took it to the local shop and they could not get it to hook up to the computer to read a trouble code. Tried manual reset of cluster and that made no difference. Any ideas?
 
could be an electrical problem like a short circuit somewhere.have the electrical system checked and have the speedometer cable checked also. that cable is usually connected to one of the tires,usually on the front left side.

I believe on that model, the speedometer cluster is controlled by a speed sensor in the transmission, but I have no idea why they cannot hook up or read the trouble code.
