Odeon refuses to show 'Rambo'

From what I have been told, Sony wanted Rambo in the largest audotorium of every Odeon it was to be screened in but were refused as Odeon were banking on other films to do better business. The two sides talked about it and tried to come to a compromise, but the film was pulled with Odeon stating that it will not show Rambo to "concentrate on alternative popular releases such as Juno, Jumper and Be Kind Rewind".
 
I think there was slightly more to the disagreement than just the screen size, but they don't tell us at site-level what it was all about.

But, put it this way...

If my cinema had picked up Rambo this week, we would have lost Juno, lost National Treasure 2 and would not have been able to pick up a copy of No Country for Old Men.

Juno and National Treasure are doing well between them, and No County is doing exceptionally well. We've not lost any business, infact we've probably gained some by picking up No Country, which was a relatively limited release.

And, dropping Rambo meant we could commit to more prints of Be Kind Rewind, also released last Fri, so cinemas that might not have shown that in the first place ended up doing so.
 
I believe there is more to this story than the screen size, and have heard a mention about Sony wanting a bigger share of the box office takings. The last I have heard is that Sony and Odeon have fallen out big time over this and am not sure what will happen with future releases. No doubt they will kiss and make up along the way although the folks in support are keeping very tight lipped over this.



I think we were due to get just the one print of Rambo, however our weekend figures were about the same as previous weeks so losing Rambo did not hit us as much as we thought. Juno, National Treasure and No Country have done exceptionally well where I am based, although Be Kind Rewind unfortunatly bombed.
