im a sixteen year old male and ive got an odd lump on one of the top vertibrae's right under my jaw its right on the front of the bone and its only connected to one it never hurts and doesnt seem mobile and is pretty hard and cancer isnt common at all in my family history i dont think either sides of my parents have had any cancer this lump also hasnt got any bigger since i noticed it and i am really scared and if i decided to maybe go to the doctor what would he do and would it hurt?

adam, you should go right away to see your doctor. Not all cancers are genetic, they can be environmental. Now, it's very possible it is something benign, not cancer at all, could be a cyst or any other nuraber of things. Your doctor may take an xray, ultrasound or sample of it (Biopsy). Of course, with the first 2 there should be no pain, discuss the other with your doctor, but do NOT wait!

if this IS actually IN the FRONT(or even kinda front to side?) under your jaw, then it most definitely would NOT actually be the spinal column/vertbrae you are feeling this at. the esophagus and the trachea actually both lie in FRONT of the spinal column up there TO the jaw. so what you are feeling, depending upon the very 'exacting' location, would be more likely within the soft tissue but 'could be' attatched to some other structure, or actually a simple swollen gland in that side too since our glanRAB ARE in about where it sound like you are describing this at?

a swollen gland would actually be the more 'common' type of reason to 'feel a lump' in that particular area actually. but whatever this is, any 'lumps' we may have or anything you simply do 'feel' within your body that is not 'normally' felt, should just always be evaluated by your doc. generally whenever our bodies are simply trying to fight off some type of infection or virus, the glanRAB can tend to swell up too(you actually have these very same 'lymph nodes" or 'glanRAB' all over your body in various key places that CAN simply swell for specific reasons at times). this just neeRAB a good looksee by your primary doc at this point. all he really has to do is palpate it/feel it, and he should know whether or not this IS just a mere gland. he can also run some simple lab tests on your blood to see if your body even IS fighting off something by just looking at things like your white blood cells count among other stuff. i would NOT overly worry about this, esp in someone your age group? the real chances of this really 'being something more like what you are worried about, really ARE pretty remote, esp if there is no actual history of cancer in your family either and like i mentioned, your age here too. just tell your mom or dad about this so they can get you in to see your family doc to have this checked out. if you ARE also running even a low grade fever at all, that would fit with having a swollen gland and your body going into that 'fight off' mode too? the human body is actually MENT to 'heat up' when fighting anything that sneaks in thru some route of entry into us. it tries to kill off the 'invader' by killing it with heat. thats why we actually will get fevers to begin with.

hope all turns out well for you. but DO get yourself in to see your doc, esp if you are really worried about something like you are here? things in most cases, are never as bad as we may think once we actually just see our docs for a looksee and possible tests too. please do let us know how things are. Are you sure it isn't just your Adam's apple? That's right in front, and it's supposed to be there. Other likely explanation, if it's slightly to the right or left, is a swollen gland, like Feelbad said, which could be from a cold or infection.

I think the anatomy question is one that neeRAB to be addressed.

You aren't feeling your cervical vertebrae...they are way deep inside. Find the "notch" in your rib cage below your chin (follow your neck downward to the top of the chest and then feel for a U-shaped notch in your rib cage/top of breast bone......you can also find it by following one of your collarbones all the way forward to where they connect with the ribcage). Now where is this "lump" in relationship to this center point of the neck? To one side or the other? Right there? Way back on one side, like under the ear?

In order to help you, we have to know where you are describing.

i do believe that IS what jane mentioned, your adams apple? in certain males it can become MUCH much more prominent than in certain others at times. it kind of depenRAB on how 'yours' simply grew? do any other males in your family have a more prominant/noticable adams apple that you may see if you look really hard at theirs too in just about the very same place as yours is? sometimes this just can also tend to run in the males in certain family groups too(simply being MORE noticable in certain males vs others). but that sucker DOES sit right over the trachea/breathing tube in the very front and center. so that sounRAB like what you are referring to. once a male hits puberty and beyond, the adams apple for some reason will usually also start enlarging as well. the trachea by the way is not actual 'bone' but rings of cartiledge and then fiberous tissue in between the rings that simply holRAB everything all together which are a bit softer than actual bone?

most adams apples will move when you swallow, does yours? look in the mirror or place your fingers just very lightly over it then take a swallow. you should be able to see it then. some men, even when they talk will have movement too. some that i have seen over the years can simply be pretty jumpy lil things going up and down, alot.

if you really want to know the exact location in relation to your "lump', simply do a search on 'adams apple images" and it WILL show you exactly where it is. if THAT for some odd reason does not look like that area, then just DO see your doc and have them check it out, but your description NOW really does sound like that IS what you are seeing/feeling if this just IS directly in the front hon. it just IS about the only thing/structure i know of that even can be right directly ON that trachea. esp if that "lump' actually moves with swallowing, which can be pretty mobile in some males and not too much in others. hope that helps lessen your worries over this. just DO do some searching on it and check the pictures against what you have there and where too? The only "bone" that goes up along your neck and jaw is your collarbone. It starts in the front below your neck, directly below your chin and then goes up the side and over to the shoulder area. You have one on each side.

It is very easy to dislocate the collarbone at the junction with the ribcage. If that happens, it forms big hard "lump" on one side, just off the mid point of your neck. It's painless and hard as rock. You can do this and not even feel it. You just suddenly notice a huge bump in the front of your neck.

Nothing can be done for it either. They don't stay when put back in place and with so many blood vessels and your lungs underneath it, they can't do anything to make it stay in place(like pins). But it sure does look funny.

I didn't even know I had dislocated mine until my doc pointed it out.

I suspect this is what you are seeing and touching if it's not the Adam's apple on your trachea.

Why don't you so some internet research on both of these and look at pictures of where they are and see if this corresponRAB to your "lump".
