Originally the Oculus Rift was Kickstarted to get some dev kits out and about for developers to add support to recent and upcoming games. The device has garnered a ton of attention for the simple fact that it's a head-tracking VR headset with some neat functionality. Today, Oculus VR Inc has confirmed that they received $16 million in funding to bring the Rift to commercial retail release.Closing the deal on the Series A funding has enabled Spark Capital and Matrix Partners, top executives from the venture capitalist firms are now board members on the Oculus Rift team, helping to shape and mold a successful future for the highly anticipated VR headset.
Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus VR and inventor of the Oculus Rift commented on the deal, saying...
One of the latest games to pledge allegiance to the VR headset is Bossa Studios' Surgeon Simulator 2013, making the hilarious and gory results of performing physics-based surgery that much more...uh...engrossing?
Anyway, I hope the Oculus Rift can make the holiday, 2013 commercial release window because it would be such an awesome thing to have that along with the new consoles releasing. Not that a lot of the new console games have integrated support for the Rift, but it just makes Christmas morning that much more special seeing the Rift alongside a brand new console under the tree, eh?
We'll keep you posted on pricing and pre-ordering details as well as an official release date. For now, feel free to learn more by paying a visit to the official website.
Oh yeah, and can we please get a commercial release on the Omni VR treadmill? Rift + Omni = orgasmic.

“Oculus began with a single mission: to put players inside the game,” ... “This investment allows us to deliver immersive and affordable virtual reality to players everywhere.”
Gamers have really been following the news like hawks eying a honey badger in an arid desert...just waiting to see what's going to happen next with this device. Things almost seemed to become sidetrack when one of the key founding members of the device was tragically killed during a gang shootout with police. However, the team managed to hunker down, pull it together and secure this deal to enable the company and the product to grow and expand beyond the initial scope established with Kickstarter.Antonio Rodriguez, serial entrepreneur and general partner at Matrix dropped a comment on why they decided to invest in Oculus, saying...
“In this business, there are only a few rare companies that can so perfectly embody the future you read about in science fiction novels," ... "What Palmer, Brendan and the team are building at Oculus so closely matches the Metaverse, we had to be part of it. Working with them to get this platform to market at scale will be enormously exciting.”
All that business jargon aside, the only thing gamers care about is how cool this device will be to use with their games and speaking of games, there is a ton of cool games that have either added support for the Oculus Rift or will add support. With cool games like Montas, Doom BFG Edition, Garry's Mod, Skyrim and Asylum as a few of the many titles making use of the Rift, it means that games will have a whole new scope on how you immerse yourself in the digital worlds you play in.
