but the networks are domestic, whereas the opium networks are Pakistani. Drug networks in Pakistan aren't a direct threat to the Afghan government.

You're stuck in this western mentality where the only thing you look at is who consumption is affecting, while over there (similar to Mexico) it has military/political ramifications.

What we're doing there is preparing the government/security forces for our eventual withdrawal. Victory there will decided not by us, but by whether the Afghan government can survive the inevitable war that will follow our departure. A single warlord with 100 loyal men doesn't seem like a big deal while you've got 100,000 highly trained NATO soldiers in country, but when we leave, he can be a game changer.

The drug networks are local, so they ship the drugs to pakistan for vast distribution. The same people who grow opium want to grow marijuana an sell it to the same drug lords who are buying their opium. You make no sense.

most of the major opium growing centres are near the border, dudes will hop back and forth. The farmers themselves dont make much money off of it, the money is in the networks, which are based in PAK. With marijuana its a different story because the networks are fairly big and more importantly they are based inside Afghanistan itself, thats where the money stays.

There was lots of "get out of those unnecessary wars" garbage early on in the campaign (with emphasis on Iraq, but his supporters assumed he meant all those little brush fires). He did swtich gears a little, later on, but the peacenicks were already on board the hopin' train by then.

Obama talks about an initial surge in Afghan followed with a drawdown of military forces and increase in non-military rebuilding assitance for insfrastructure and agriculture (the non-poppy kind, supposedly).

we watched the soviets get all fucked up in that shithole of a country and then we go in and try to occupy it.. iraq may be worth it because they have oil and at least were a civilized country.

Oh so the US wants to support Pakistani Opium trade instead. Good to know (as if it weren't what I was driving at in the first place)

I'm the only one seeing a problem with this shit?

What's your point? DE didn't say Obama started the war, but Obama sure as hell said he'd put a stop to it, didn't he.

Hope and change? 17 fucking months and he can't (more like won't) stop any of GWs pet wars, because they're now his pet wars, and he likes greasing the war machine.

Your hopey changey president is a liar and a murderer on at least the scale of Bush/Cheney.

The Government of Afghanistan decides what is legal or illegal in their country, not us.

We need to just leave there and let them kill each other in the struggle for power.

For a nation of Muslims, where drugs for recreation is forbidden (and use is illegal, just like in the US by its citizens), they sure have a funny way of "looking the other way" while it is grown and processed.
