WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –President Barack Obama spent the weekend on a bus tour through Florida, headlining four rallies along the Interstate-4 corridor, the swing region in this swing state. But the point of a bus tour isn’t just giving speeches; it’s stopping at coffee shops and pizza places along the way, mingling with voters, making the campaign personal (and winning some good local press along the way).
On that measure, the Obama bus tour didn’t disappoint.
On Sunday, he stopped by Big Apple Pizza & Pasta Restaurant in Fort Pierce, and was greeted by the owner who embraced him a bear hug and then lifted him off the ground.
He added to the assembled group: “I just want to point out, this volunteering is not as easy as it looks.”
He tried another number for Mr. Roberts and this time he got through. But it seems as if he didn’t believe it was him. “You don’t believe me, do you?” the president said. “It’s true, it’s me.”
But all that may have paled in comparison to Saturday, when he stopped at Gator Dockside, a sports bar in Orlando.
At one table, he met Andre Wupperman, who turns 7 next week, and was informed that he was born in Hawaii.
“You were born in Hawaii?” the president asked. “You have a birth certificate?” The table burst out laughing.
