Numb Fingertips

Any idea if numb fingertips are a sign of anything bad? It is only on my right hand and particularly, or most of the time, only my index finger.

I don't experience it all the time, just periodically. Cold temps always affects my right fingers. However, I am in the house right now with a tingling numb right fingertip.

As far as my overall health condition, my blood pressure is normal. My pulse is normal. I'm not overweight. I exercise almost every single day. The last time my blood sugar was checked it was a perfect number.

I'm baffled as to why I am experiencing this.

couple other thoughts. possible c spine level involvment or a vascular issue. carpal tunnel would affect the median nerve, which is generally the middle finger? the thing is,the nerves that innervate the arm down thru the fingers are all up in the end nerves of the c spine(c 6 7 8) and the very first T spine nerve too. but up in that area, (it is actually called the brachial plexus?) there the nerves have alot of "crossover' since all of the c spine nerves, unlike the the rest of the spine are all kind of combination nerves to a certain degree? what that means is they have both motor and sensory in the one nerve that at each level. so you could have like a sensory issue with one particular finger but the motor part of that same nerve can also innervate the fine motor muscles in another area? you know what i mean? if you simply look up the 'peripheral nervous system" you can read thru that and you will understand a bit more clearly just what i am talking about.

i would at the very least have your primary eval this for you and see what he or she thinks based upoin a more hands on neuro exam. the real key when dealing with anything affecting an area of our bodies is simple testing and ruling out and trying to track back the symptom to its base generator or place of where it starts? anywhere from those fingers affected on up thru that arm and to the actual spinal cord area where it starts should be or could be a place where that nerve is being compromised in some way. the most likely with that finger would be up in that c spine level. but certain fingers are just innervated from that lower c spine level so even obtaining an MRI of that c spine may be very helpful in finding out what is actually impacting the nerve. but DO please look up the peripheral nervous system, it will tell you alot about just how those finger nerves are actually innervated among other things.

there are just alot of different possible issues that could create what it is you are feeling. testing things is about the only true way of tracking that problem area back to where the compromise actually is. i would just make an appt with your primary to start. are you experiencing any actual pain anywhere from like the neck on down thru the fingers or any other symptoms? please let us know what you find out. good luck, FB

I'm not experiencing any other numbness / nerve issues, and I haven't experienced this particular numbness since my post.

Actually it is this one hand and my index finger that is the very first to get numb with the slightest temperature drop. After my post it sort of hit me -- I cut the very tip of this finger about six years ago. It was deep enough to need a few stitches. I am wondering now if I may have done some permanent nerve damage to that finger, enough for it to have only slightly lower circulation. This might explain being the first finger to go numb if it gets cold.

About 10 yrs ago when I dropped my bodyweight to where I was very trim. I also experienced numb fingertips when it was cold. The fingers actually turned white. I eventually gained back about 10 lbs. The numb fingers went away after I gained back the weight. Please note I was never really heavy. I just wanted a very trim appearance.
