I just noticed this a few days ago, being able to save on SMB for the win

yeah something a little more full featured that just exiting to the wii menu to save the state would be nice, but still, it's better than nothing

I didn't find a save option for Donkey Kong

you just hit the wii menu button on your remote, then exit to wii menu. next time you start the game, you'll be at the same spot you left off
