Hi everyone i am new here, and hoping maybe someone might have some advice before i go into a doctor but here is what is wrong. For about a year now been having hypertension been eating more vegetables to clean it up and i do not eat junk food hardly last time was several months ago. I do make alot of barley soups with no salt everything fresh and salads with chicken but still got the high blood pressure. Now about a month ago i started to fall asleep and woke up trying to breathe and no matter what i did i could not get any air after about 5 minutes went by It allowed me to breathe again but it keeps coming back not just when i am asleep but awake also whether standing or just sitting. Last time i was relaxing after a warm shower after work and was reading a book and just could not breathe, and a couple times i have been getting a sharp pain in my chest like someone is stabbing me bad enough i double over and can hardly breathe. Been really tired lately which is not good in a tire shop after 8 hours of sleep i actually surprised my manager when he was talking to me I fell asleep standing up while working on a car. I am only 22 not sure what is going on but am getting alittle worried hoping someone else might know what is going on or maybe went through the same things. would be really appreciative if anyone knows

I hope you're doing better. That's much to handle for a 22 y.o. Have you been to the doc already?

What you're experiencing now is heredito-familial. Kidney diseases and high-blood pressure run in families. So you said you've had hypertension, right? Hypertension can cause kidney failure and vice versa. And you have had trouble breathing, which could mean your kidneys are not filtering as much water as it ought to and this water is trapped in your body with no way out. In some cases this water seep into your tissues from your blood vessels. example is in the case of your lungs. It's called pleural effusion, meaning there's already fluid in your lungs. This can make breathing hard and painful. And because of too much water in your body, your heart is working extra hard to move your blood and that's why your experiencing sharp pain.

I am not trying to scare you. I am just stating facts of what might be wrong. Just an advice and an opinion.

You should monitor your weight twice a day. It is the best indicator if you're retaining more water than you should. Limit protein intake as it draws more water. Also limit fluid intake to not more than 1L. Watch out for puffiness in your face, hands, and legs. If you're having trouble breathing, sit down, relax and lean forward. When you sleep, use a lot of pillows for your head.

Go to a different doc for a second opinion if you have not. Ask for a urinalysis especially for proteins and glucose. Have kidney and lung-function tests done. ecg for your heart, and chest x-ray for your lungs. have a complete physical exam done. Tell the doc about everything you have experienced.

I hope you find this helpful.

Best wishes.

so sorry you have not heard anythiong from yopur mom. that 'not knowing' stuff is sometimes worrse than knowing? hopefully something will 'show up?

so, after you saw that primary who 'blew off' what IS something that needs ongoing monitorong and possible meds to bring it down, did you at least seek out another primary then who IS at the very least now keeping a closer eye on things for you? if not, you seriously HAVE to seek out another primary who just simply does their job 'for you' here and at least gets you onto some high BP meds? even at your age, just even having the constant high BPs WILL damage your kidneys(and create higher risk factors for other medical issues to also develop) eventually if things are simply not well regulated. one of the guys i used to be on the fire dept with who was VERY young like you are, ONLY because HIS primary actually did the very same thing yours did(what IS it with stupid primarys here), he ended up needing a kidney transplant at only 26 years old. i just freaked out on what he told me about how little time and effort his own doc put into keeping his BPs down. it really was sick, and what YOUR primary did to you IS sick too. age simply does not matter when it comes to ALLL the many issues that simply can occur when BPs are way too high?

and just considering that your father also is suffering from high BPs among other things just IS a much more critical reason for YOU to try as much as possible to get the BPs well controlled right now, and not later after damage occurs that simply cannot BE reveresed in the kidneys.

NO 'real' caring primary should have blown this off in you not at that high(this is practically real negligence on the docs part here, seriously). i would, if you have not already just done so, find another to just try with everything they have availiable today to just even do this, get those BPs under control NOW as much as you can, or you and your body organs/systems WILL be the things to suffer the consequences in ways you do not even know about yet.

getting your BPs managed and monitored should be a main and major priority for you right now. it is only what this CAN very easily lead too inthe not too distant future that just 'ups' the need for this to be watched and treated appropriately now. not to even begin to mention the other symptoms you just are having right now too? those need some further exploration as well to figure out exactly what IS creating them in you as well? it could be the kidneys or something else, but it DOES require a good caring primary and some ongoing testing to just determine how every little thing is actually working in you right now.

hopefully you will find a really great doc to help to manage this and give you some sort of answers. and i would tell whoever you see that you simply refuse to be 'blown off' when you so very obviously HAVE a pretty high running set of BPs there that need some help(along with a family history which makes it harder to control and more imperritive treating it just is). this IS what a good primary simply does for their patients.

i hope things can get under control asap for you. this IS just something that YOU need to make certain gets the proper attention and do not allow yourself to be at all intimidated by ANY doc ever. trust me, they ARE mere humans like we are. but at the very least right now, you DO also NEED a good eval and physical with all the normal bloodwork being done to also check out your kidney functions too. that just IS crucial to see and know here even at your age. sorry to be all gloomy doomy here on you, but if more people were even aware of just how impactful just even having high BPs were/are, even in their 20s. there would be alot less 'events' created by just THAT alone. good luck with this and with your dad too hon,and please keep us posted as to how things are just going with you. hi spyros, we must have been answering at the very same time. me still a typin while you posting this last message you did? i am rather 'slowed" in my typing here.

brooklyn?? just wanted to BIG DITTO everything spy just mentioned to you hon. you cannot even begin to imagine just what real true impact 'just' even having the high BPs you have even at your age can bring on and simply even 'do" to the human body no matter what the age is really, esp over a longer time period.

if you cannot actually get into a primary like really soon and still are having the trouble breathing, at the very least here, go to your closest ER for a FULL eval on your symptoms. you just truely NEED to know what overall real impact the high running BPs have had on your body and where your kidney functions are also at right now as well. i simply totally forget about the trouble/difficulty in your breathing also being a part of this since i did not go back to your original post? just recalled you were having "other' symptoms. we NEVER mess around when it comes to our breathing ability, ever. that NEEDS some evaluating/attention and a real dx too right now.

just DO get yourself fully evaluated and checked out so YOU simply KNOW where you are at with your actual kidney functions(that UA for protien is also a biggie here too) and anything else that can simply also be very impacted with high BP too. do you even know just exactly "when" your higher than norm BPs actually started if its been this high at only age 22? that too DOES matter. good luck again and DO let us also know everything you find out, hopefully much sooner vs later? Thanks actually never thought about the water part i do drink alot of water especially since i work in a car shop so gets hot during the day i drink a lot. Have not been to a doctor yet though do got a appointment set up for tuesday next week for a different doctor since thats my next day off hope he is better than the previous one my boss has had him before and recommended him so giving him a chance and hoping for the best ^_^ For my hypertension actually not sure really when it started I know my energy began to dip last year and slowly as been declining and did not really become concerned until about november when i got my blood pressure checked and since then have been keeping an eye on it and have not seen it go below 140/80 for many months now and my pulse is never below 110 when it is checked and has gotten much higher. Used to be i could feel the veins going through my throat or the wrist and feel them strongly but slowly now used to them beating along like id been running when i have been sitting down for several minutes. Wish for it to be back to where it was so for once my heart does not feel like i had been exercising, been kindof hoping if i exercised more it would help and i have been going to the gym running and using their bikes and lifting weights 4 times a week hoping it helps. Have cut back on almost all sugar except fruits and limited myself to the others and gotten rid of caffeine to try and keep it from not getting too high. My family hate my cooking now two since i got rid of the salt and try to cook fresh they think it has no flavor but since i have done it have gotten used to it and noticed that it tastes better to me at least. Most of the time though i make everything from scratch since cook books that i find most of them are loaded with salt, sugar which makes it hard. But i try the best i can have gotten pretty good at cooking fish though and i try and make whole wheat flaxseed bread to help as well. My family read that eating bananas can help blood pressure and breathing so lol they bought ten pounds of it today and have been making me eat them three times a day in hopes that it may help. Hopefully it works maybe from all the potassium Sorry took so long to reply though probably does not help my job has been asking for more hours since little low on staff so overtime is welcomed here been getting up at 6 in the morning and working till nine o'clock many nights in a row to help out. Been really busy two up here when tourist season hits I never thought i would get tired of working on RVs or diesel trucks hauling their trailers that they sleep in :(

For the blood pressure though been keeping up with it by having my older sister check it regularly she is a licensed nurse and works in the hospital up here for many years she is worried to but she so far does not have any problems thankfully. She has told our father about my problems as well and talked with him the day before and sadly he told me is worried more about outliving his kids in regards to me and my older brother that has lung problems as well. My older brother has lung problems as well but while he was young made it worse when he was 15 he started smoking and before he realized that he had a problem it was too late. Now he has had alot of damage there and so far counted 6 times that his lungs have collapsed from what he did to them.I do not know if he has high blood pressure though or kidney problems though never asked him about it probably should and see maybe thats the issue we all have. Have always been sorry for him but never thought would slowly come down with what he had somewhat. But i can say have never smoked or done drugs including pot but reason i have not was i saw what happened to him and did not want that to happen to me course guess it is anyway whether i like it or not. hopefully i wont quite yet biggest worry everyone has for me is they will wake up and find i stopped breathing and died in the night. Wish me luck though on tuesday hopefully he will be the right doctor.

when you say hypertension, just exactly what have your BPs been running like to this point? that DOES matter. the one thing here that just 'can" lead to hypertension and kind of vice versa is having kidney prolems? i would definitely see your doc for some bloodwork done on your kidneys along with the one type of testing that just shows any possible underlyiong type of kidney disease usually the very first indicator? having a UA that is looking for ANY traces of actual protien IN your urine(this would show even before ANY labs actually would change too?)? there are soooo many people out there who DO have either a genetic inherited type of specific kidney disease or have an underlying disease process going on in just about any given abdominal organ who simply ONLY becasue they have yet to show any real 'symptoms' just do not have a freaking clue they even have it yet. this WAS my case too with MY kidney disease.

i would just go to your regular primary doc and have a very thorough and full physical along with making certain to tell him everything you mentioned here? and make certain you also have that standard UA done too(this usually comes along with full physical, but make certain they just do this)? this is only just one of many 'possibles" when it comes to high BPs. the kidney CAN either cause it, or become damaged 'becasue" of it too. they are very MUCH interconnected when it comes to BPs.

at only age 22, you should just NOT be having this particular problem yet so there would almost have to be some type of more underlying factor that is creating these for you. that isthe main thing that needs to be found out in you, the 'whats" of the trigger or generator. is there ANY family history at all that you know of of anyone actually having ANY kidney issues or high BPs? and DO make certain to actually ask BOTH sides of the family too? sometimes certain medical issues just do NOT get talked about so you would even know about it? asking your mom and dad should tell you something. but DO see your doc about this and get that full workup and physical done just so you know whats going on in you right now. hopefully this can be treated and it IS just a BP issue, but the other things that simply 'can" create high BPs also need some ruling out here too to even know that. please let us know what you find out. about a year ago had issues where i cannot urinate as long as i used to, i could feel like i have to go really bad and when i get to the bathroom only a drizzle comes out. My Blood pressure though ive had my pulse get as high as 160 and bp over 170/90 thats the last time i went to a doctor and he told me not to worry about it I am young. Is what he said never gone back to him after that. For kidney disease i do not know my fathers kidneys he says are working at 60 percent right now but he is getting old and slowly dying from hypertension and I know he has lung issues as well but he gots a machine to help him and he is almost sixty so is kindof expected. He I worry the most about since poor guy used to be a big strong man a war vet. Now you look at him and he is slowly shrinking bruises up and down his arms from constant doctors visits, his hypertension has gotten worse though that they cut a hole in his groin and shoved a tool up through his veins to his heart to fry the inside of his hearts nerves to hopefully reset his heart back to normal and caused him to be in the hospital for a week. He is due for another surgery again for the same thing this time burning the outside to try and help. His bp has finally stabilized somewhat for him but that is only when he is not moving when he walks it shoots up. After his first surgery when he was still in the hospital he actually scared the nurses when he for the first time tried to get out of the bed to take a shower his machines flipped out and the nurses came running in from his bp shooting up so fast.

My father i do know has history of brain cancer as well several of his family have died from it, as for my mother though bad part is I have no idea unless i track her real family down. My mom was born in Germany and when she was a couple years old she was adopted and brought to America since her mother could not take care of her. Been 22 years and still have not met her, my mother has talked to her but I do not know German and by what Ive been told she can't speak English. My mother has written her letters but during the last year unfortunately her letters are being sent back unopened so we are not sure what is wrong whether she moved or died.

i too think your brother should be getting a good physical and at the very least here have your sister also monitor HIS BPs too just to really see where he is at? the insane familial crap that even CAN run in families is kind of unreal at times too. my family has what is called polycystic kidney disease running it it from my moms side of the family? i and my sister never had a freaking clue we even HAD this running in the family or that both of us had been living with this crappy disease our whole lives(i was about 39-40 when i found out i had it) until around 99? when my youngest son "suddenly presented" IN liver failure from this crappy thing? he somehow recieved or had a gene mutate off this disease and HE only ended up with an insane 'fibrotic' liver disease that actually caused full liver failure by age 13. it was a nightmare. thankfully he had a transplant in 2000 and has been doing wonderfully with the new liver.

but this is when we were actually told by HIS docs that my hubby and i needed to have ultrasounds done on our kidneys to see who gave this to our son? never thought in a million years it was me but was shocked to see a ton of huge 'globs' of cysted both inside and outside both kindneys AND my liver as well. so i am not dealing with my own kidney and liver disease too. withthsi particular disease tho, labs wont change til this level of damage becomes pretty extensive and up til my last set of labs done this spring, every single lab was totally and completely withion mid range normal. things are starting to change now and my kidneys and liver are absolutely huge since the cystic crap is growing both inside and outside the organs creating VERY large organs that were not ment for MY tiny body. crappy stuff ya know?

i am soo glad youy do have an appt with a primary that someone you know actually recommended to you. that really IS one of the best ways to actually find a good doc or specialist too, word of mouth from others who have them too. but i would kind of 'set the tone' with this new doc at that very first visit and tell him how you were blown off by the other primary who did not seem to think that even at your age, having an actual BP of 170/90 was something to even worry about let alone try and treat either?? that really was a very stupid doc actually.

so then tell him that i need a doc who is willing to try and HELP me with this BP and the other symptoms you are also having in order to keep ME healthy. hopefullly, he will do just that. right now you just need some pretty thorough types of testing done to really find out how well your kidneys are functioning and to find out if you DO ahve actual lung problems like your dad or from fluids that are simply being retained too? you just really need to know where you are at here medically.

i do hope this is a really good doc for you. good luck on tues, and please DO let us know what you find out, K? FB

Hey sorry to take so long to reply but actually did not get to visit him since he was called urgently out of town for a family member death so will actually be going to see him this up coming tuesday instead little sad about that but my blood pressure has gone down a little though sweet. A family member had mentioned that green tea supposedly lowers blood pressure so last two days been drinking it by the gallons and went down 8 points ^_^ hoping it works. Going to test it though going to drink it for another day and see if it stays the same or goes up or down and then will cut off it for a week and see if it surges maybe this will help i hope. Looking for anything that can help until this next up coming tuesday. Sucks its taking so long and sorry for so long to reply back to everyone helping out so much i really do appreciate it. This website was actually saved in my favorites and someone in my house went and cleaned up the computer literally defragging getting rid of old files and even wiped most of the favorites. Got so mad my memory sucks so could not remember for the life of me what the website was. Sad part is when i got off of work i bought groceries and went out to go to my car and spent thirty minutes looking for it worried it might have been stolen found out i forgot i loaned the car out. If i can get anything into longterm im great short term im doomed :(
Also am thinking maybe i am retaining fluids most of the time i drink alot of water at work and usually have yellow to dark yellow urine and oddly on my day off all i drank this i swear was a small glass of orange juice in the morning and a cup of milk at night and half way through the day my kidneys must have woke up or something but i could not stop peeing i was praying it would stop got so bad. That was before the green tea just some reason it went clear and i was peeing like a faucet every 10 minutes for half the night and the next day was back to dark yellow urine despite my attempts at drowning myself in water to clear it up. Could not have been soda or sugar i dont believe at least i use honey for sweeteners now mainly and have not had soda in a long time??? Sometimes i wonder if i am just losing it and whether to not bother with a doctor and if i get sick then i get sick but at the same time in my head I'm telling myself to find a solution course i can't remember my solutions anyway unless i write them down. But one thing i really am grateful for is at least this website has helped a lot i did not now what to do and was truthfully afraid to go to a doctor since i was a kid grew untrusting of doctors and still do not trust them especially when i was a kid i grew up in Utah. During high school i developed a rash that went from my face down to my feet a really dark red blotch and my parents took me to St. Marks in Salt Lake City and they gave me medicine for it and once medicine was gone it still was there looking just as bad and they kept giving stronger and stronger and still did not work eventually they told me it was probably one of the ones that did not respond to medicine and would have to wait for it to go away on its own which eventually it did many weeks later but it short of dropped some trust since the ones before were rude and i felt like a guinea pig i did not even want to be there but my parents forced me two and when they found medicine did not work they came in and took pictures of my back which surprised me and made me feel more like the guinea pig. Course I tend to be stubborn going to docs and hate taking pain meds unless forced. Last summer i had killed some rabbits and had them strung up on a wooded frame in the air did not realize weather had caused it to wear and while cutting with a really sharp knife the wood gave way and the knife embedded itself in my hand down to the bone. Not sure what caused it but first thing i did was pull the knife out and apply pressure, unfortunately i was not home and actually went to Nevada 120 miles from the nearest hospital and ended up driving the whole way applying pressure and went again to Salt Lake ER and they made me wait for 30 minutes with blood soak bandages and they did not get me in until i started bleeding on the floor still cant use that hand entirely its getting better now the scar from the stitches has gotten used to being used more. Not sure why i am yapping on but its 4 a.m. here and i guess i needed someone to talk to since have been worried about going to the doctor since i don't trust them really well. If anyone is still reading this sorry for asking for more but anyone got any tips on a doc that i can tell is trust worthy and is a good one and things to stay away from them about other than them brushing off potential problems? Would really appreciate it Thanks everyone
