not getting gmail notifications

I have the regular Droid. Suddenly today I am not getting gmail notifications when I get emails. I think it has something to do with Google Talk because I am suddenly getting the same notification from that app, and I think I'm getting it everytime I get an email. I have never used Google Talk but my phone keeps getting the "!" notification saying that "google talk authentification failed".

My gmail notification is turned on and even when I try to sign into google talk to get it to shut down or turn off or check the settings, it wont sign in, it's super slow and then that "!" notification comes up again.

I'm confused, I would just rather delete google talk bc i dont even use it but it seems to be effecting my gmail and the phone wont let me uninstall it!! Can anyone help?

GMail uses GTalk for authentication when logging into your GMail. If you're getting a password error from GTalk then that's why you're not getting GMail notifications as your GMail isn't logging in.

I did not change my password. I dont have a power widget and to Extorian: when I press refresh in gmail the new emails will appear but they wont come in on their own, how do I fix this if it does have to do with the google talk authentification.

Unless you know exactly what you're doing with a Task Killer, I'd recommend it. In general they result in increased lag, increased CPU use, decreased reliability, and increased power use, while offering only very short term improvements.

You could either uninstalling it or turning it off (if that's an option) and see if it fixes your problem. If the Task Killer is killing any essential services or applications that are required by GMail this could be the problem.

So I deleted the TasKiller this morning and it did fix the problem, for about an hour. It then went back to not getting the gmail notifications and getting the google talk authentification failed notifications. Still dont know what to do!?

Might not have been the Task Killer then... but.... I'm now pondering if it's a network connection problem. Do you use WiFi at home? Some mobile networks either don't allow, or don't respond quickly, to data requests to/from specific sites. I would try turning WiFi off (this will force it to keep a connection open using mobile data instead) and see if that changes anything - either always works or never works hopefully.

I am going somewhere with this... honest.

See... Android, by default, uses mobile data when the phone is asleep (screen off). As soon as you wake the phone up (screen on) it connects to WiFi if available.

So, if your mobile data connection isn't working, you'll get no notifications. GTalk won't be able to log in. When you wake your phone though and connect to WiFi, when you then refresh your GMail all the emails will download because your WiFi is working.

Unfortunately this is just a theory, and it's hard to test.

In your WiFi settings page, you can press Menu and select Advanced, then there should be an option something like "Wi-Fi sleep policy". If you set that to Never then your phone will remain connected to WiFi even when the phone is asleep. Try that for a few hours at home (i.e. in range of your WiFi) and see if stuff works better. Maybe send yourself an email from somewhere else to test more quickly.

It is not your phone. Seems lots of people are seeing the same issue. I am one of them...

So issue is still going on, and today I tried to download Kik in the market and it would not DL it so I guess my phone is just crap. I did hear that there is a problem going on with google right now though that was posted on Androidcentral.com and that they are working on fixing it so maybe that has something to do with it, im going to investigate later when I get out of work....

i'm thinking i should just get my phone reset and start from scratch to see if it makes a difference.
