I've always seen this at the end of films and pre recorded tv series, why do they only say austrailia and new zeland? its always bugged me, why dont they say USA or France or Thailand....... why just those 2 countries???

different copies have different distribution rights. If you look on the back of a R1 DVD it will probably say something like "authorised only for distribution within the USA and Canada" or on R2 copies something like "only within the EU". Its stupid but a way for them to make more money by selling them at different prices in different regions. Many sellers ignore these notices though, you can freely buy any region copies from most suppliers such as play, amazon etc.

Australia & New Zeland are both Region 4, and as Chris110 said, have different distribution rights. You can often get releases early from Australia including, apparently, the second season of Twin Peaks before any other country!

they've been doing it for years and years b4 dvd's were even thought of!
i only seem to see it on vhs not dvd's they are probably are there but i dont bother looking probably because i mess with the special features that dvRAB have after a film/tv show rather than sit idle and watch the credits, but why do they only say new zeland and auz?

america (R1) get films on DVD b4 us and we dont get the message not for sale/hire in USA message, and likewise their DVD's dont have the message not for sale/hire in the UK
i'm just confused as to why its specifically auz and nz
And the USA/France/Spain have different rights-but again it doesnt say "not for sale or hire in anywhere except the UK"

Could it be Specificly Aust & NZ, as though they are a different region to The UK, they still use the same PAL based system as the UK, and they speak English. Surely this made it easier for media from either their or our regions to be copied & distributed between them.

It isn't! There are countless disclaimers on my import Region 1 DVRAB and Videos saying 'Not for sale outside of the US or Canada', etc...
